Overview

What is Freed?

Freed is an ambient AI scribe for clinicians, published by Freed, Inc. of San Francisco. It listens to a consultation — in person or over telehealth — and returns a structured SOAP note roughly a minute after the visit ends, shaped to the specialty and to the clinician's own formatting habits.

The pipeline is purpose-built rather than generic. Speech recognition trained on clinical language covers some 27,000 medications and terms. A large language model then summarises and filters the transcript, dropping small talk and keeping what is medically significant. Specialty-aware corrections tighten the wording, so that a stomach bug becomes viral gastroenteritis, while patient-facing instructions stay in plain English. A final pass checks the note for consistency and scans for hallucination. Freed claims 98% recall on medical terms across 30+ specialties.

Three further products sit around the scribe. Clinical Evidence answers clinical questions from a curated library of more than 50 sources — PubMed, Cochrane, the FDA, CDC, NIH, USPSTF and WHO among them — with citations you can open, and with the patient's own history and medications used to sharpen the answer while identifiers stay inside Freed. The Coding Assistant proposes ICD-10, CPT and E/M codes at the highest justified level, then rewrites the note to carry the specificity a payer will expect. Front Desk, still in beta, is an AI receptionist that picks up overflow, lunchtime and after-hours calls, triages intake, refill and referral requests, and files each one into a shared inbox with two-way SMS.

The positioning is deliberately narrow. Freed targets independent and mid-sized practices and sells directly to clinicians rather than through hospital procurement, stating plainly that it is not made for massive healthcare systems. The company reports 26,000+ clinicians, 1,300+ clinics, over two million notes processed monthly and 32,589,627 patient visits transcribed in 2025.

Freed was founded in 2023 by Erez Druk, a former Meta engineer who had watched his wife, family physician Dr Gabi Meckler, chart late into the night, and co-founded with CTO Andrey Bannikov. Support is US-based and human: scheduled calls, live office hours and recorded walkthroughs.

What it does

  • Turn a recorded patient visit into a structured SOAP note about a minute after the consultation ends
  • Shape every note to the specialty and to the clinician's own formatting, learned from a single edited note
  • Suggest ICD-10, CPT and E/M codes at the highest justified level and update the note to match
  • Answer clinical questions with citations drawn from a curated library of more than 50 trusted sources
  • Push a finished note into any browser-based EHR with a single click through the Chrome extension
  • Generate patient instructions, referral letters, sick notes and return-to-work certificates straight after the visit
  • Answer the clinic telephone, triage patient requests and file each call into a shared inbox with two-way SMS

When to use Freed / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if Freed is the right fit.

When to use Freed

  • Solo clinicians and small independent practices who carry their own charting and finish notes after hours
  • Mental and behavioural health practitioners — psychiatrists, therapists, counsellors — whose sessions are long, narrative and slow to write up
  • Nurse practitioners and primary care teams in family medicine, internal medicine, paediatrics and OB/GYN working through high visit volumes
  • Clinics losing patient calls to voicemail and needing phone cover at lunchtime, after hours or during overflow
  • Practices trying to tighten reimbursement, who want ICD-10, CPT and E/M suggestions surfaced inside the note rather than looked up afterwards

When not to use Freed

  • Large hospital systems: Freed says outright that it is not made for massive healthcare organisations and sells directly to clinicians instead
  • European practices needing GDPR guarantees: there is no compliance claim, no Article 27 representative, no DPA, and every server sits in the United States
  • Developers wanting to build on top of the tool: there is no public API and no developer documentation anywhere on the site
  • Clinicians on desktop-only or non-browser EHRs: one-click push runs through a Chrome extension against browser-based systems, and only on the Premier tier
  • Anyone under 18, and anyone wanting a permanently free tool: the platform is contractually adults-only and the free trial lasts seven days
Get started

How to use Freed

A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.

  1. Create an account from the website — no credit card is required and the free trial runs for seven days
  2. Enter your specialty so that the matching note templates are selected for you automatically
  3. Open a visit, click Capture conversation, confirm the microphone is working, then click End visit when the consultation is over
  4. Wait about a minute: the finished note appears in the auto-hiding sidebar, revealed by hovering the left edge of the screen
  5. Review and edit the note directly, or use AI Chat in plain language to restructure it, expand a section or dictate an addition where you want it inserted
  6. Ask Freed to learn the format of a note you have just edited, or switch Auto Learn on so it picks up your edits in the background
  7. Read the Clinical Evidence answers and open the linked citations before acting on them
  8. Accept or reject the suggested ICD-10, CPT and E/M codes, letting Freed update the note's specificity when you accept one
  9. Install the Chrome extension, pin it, open it while your browser-based EHR is on screen, and push the note across in one click on the Premier tier
  10. Set your retention preference — keep notes indefinitely or delete them automatically after 30 days — and manage billing through Stripe in the account settings

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Low entry price for the category at USD 39 per month on an annual commitment, with a seven-day trial that needs no credit card
  • Fast to adopt: no EHR-side configuration, no IT support, no API to integrate — the Chrome extension installs in under a minute
  • Broad clinical coverage, with 96 specialties claimed, templates for 20+, and usable notes even for specialties not yet listed
  • Clinical Evidence cites its sources and lets you open the original reference, keeping the clinician as the decision-maker
  • Serious documented security posture: SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2, HIPAA, HITECH, OWASP, FIPS 140-2, AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.2-1.3 in transit
  • Genuine user control: audio deleted automatically after the note is generated, retention switchable to 30-day auto-deletion, no training on PHI
  • Data ownership left with the clinician, with export available on request even after the contract ends, and US-based human support

Cons

  • No permanent free plan: once the seven-day trial ends, all use is paid, and prepaid subscription fees are never refunded on cancellation
  • No GDPR claim, no Article 27 representative and no DPA, with all hosting and processing in the United States — a hard stop for many European practices
  • No public API and no developer documentation, so the tool cannot be integrated programmatically into an existing stack
  • EHR push needs the Premier tier and a browser-based EHR opened in Chrome; direct integration is reserved for group accounts
  • The Starter tier caps out at 40 notes per month, and ICD-10/CPT synchronisation into the EHR is still announced as coming soon
  • No subprocessor list is published, and the Drata Trust Center linked in the footer cannot be opened without authentication
  • Browser Do Not Track signals are explicitly not honoured, advertising trackers and session replay run on the marketing site, and disputes go to mandatory JAMS arbitration with a class action waiver

Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Freed handles your data.

GDPR overview

There is no GDPR implementation to report. Freed never claims GDPR compliance anywhere on its site; the single occurrence of the term sits in a blog post listing HIPAA, GDPR and CCPA as generic regulatory risks. No Article 27 representative is designated, no DPO is named, and no Data Processing Agreement is published or offered — the only agreement available is a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement, a different instrument entirely. The compliance Freed does claim is American: HIPAA, HITECH, SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2, OWASP and FIPS PUB 140-2. The privacy policy, effective 11 August 2026, warns non-US residents plainly that the website, platform and servers are operated in the United States, that their information may be transferred there, and that they use the service at their own risk. Access, correction and deletion requests go to support@getfreed.ai or through account settings.

Who owns the data?

Under the Platform Terms of Use you own all right, title and interest in Your Data and in the Output — medical records, patient recordings, Voice ID and generated notes alike. Freed takes a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable licence to run the service, to analyse and improve the platform, and to train its AI/ML models, that last use being conditional on consent you give in the platform settings. What Freed keeps outright is the platform itself plus Usage Data, Aggregate Data and De-Identified Data: it may disclose de-identified data to third parties at its own discretion, and may publish, transfer or sell aggregate data. Protected health information is governed by the attached Business Associate Agreement, which prevails in case of conflict.

Reuse rights

Because you own Your Data and the Output, you may reuse what Freed produces without asking permission: edit the notes, download letters as PDFs, copy sections into a record, push them into an EHR, and export everything on request even after the contract ends. The restriction runs the other way. Freed's own Content — software, text, graphics, audiovisual material — is licensed to you solely for use of the platform and may not be resold, redistributed, republished or used to build a competing product. On Freed's side the privacy policy lists its own uses: providing the website and platform, direct marketing, support and improvement, research and fraud detection, legal and regulatory obligations, disclosure to processors handling hosting, payment, CRM, email and analytics, transfer in a corporate transaction, and improving or training its AI models. The marketing site runs cookies, pixels, web beacons, local storage, session replay through Sentry, Google Analytics, Hotjar and a Meta pixel, and Freed states that it does not honour browser Do Not Track signals. Clinically the line is drawn much harder: protected health information is never used for training, the models learn only from de-identified notes, identifiers are stripped before any external Clinical Evidence query, and human clinicians review anonymised samples to validate model performance.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Patient recordings can be deleted immediately after processing, or kept in line with whatever retention you choose for the rest of your data. For that data you pick one of two options: keep it for 30 days from submission, or keep it for the term of the contract. On the 30-day setting, data is deleted after the period and stays a further seven days in the backup system; notes removed this way cannot be recovered. Learned Output is an exception — it is kept until you delete it by hand. Audio for a paused visit is not retained beyond 14 days. When the contract ends, Freed will help export your data on written request within 30 days, then delete it. Account deletion is requested by email and is irreversible.

Hosting summary

All data is stored and processed in the United States. Freed states plainly on its security page that data is stored within the United States, and its privacy policy adds that the website, the platform and their servers are operated there — with an explicit warning that information from non-US users may be transferred to, maintained on and used from US systems, under privacy laws that may be less protective than their own. The infrastructure runs on Microsoft Azure, with Azure Security Center and Drata used for continuous monitoring and vulnerability scanning. DNS resolution for the domain points to a Microsoft-operated address in Phoenix, Arizona, consistent with that claim. Protected health information is encrypted with AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.2-1.3 in transit, all processing happens inside environments declared HIPAA-compliant, and third parties are engaged only under signed Business Associate Agreements. There is no European region, no data residency option outside the United States, and no published list of subprocessors.

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Freed.

  • Everything is hosted and processed in the United States with no GDPR guarantee, so a European clinic risks handling patient data outside any framework its regulator would accept
  • Whether the models train on Your Data depends on a platform setting: check it when the account is opened rather than assuming the default is the one you want
  • De-identified and aggregated data leave your control entirely — Freed may disclose de-identified data to third parties at its discretion and may publish, transfer or sell aggregate data
  • Learned Output is kept until you delete it by hand, even when note retention is set to 30 days, so a style-learning feature quietly outlives your retention policy
  • The 30-day auto-deletion is irreversible and audio for a paused visit is dropped after 14 days, meaning a forgotten recording is simply gone
  • An ambient scribe writes fluent, plausible notes: the accuracy pass scans for hallucination but the clinician still signs the chart, and skipping the read-through is the real risk of habituation
  • Commercial and legal friction to plan for: no refund of prepaid fees, higher prices and no Freed-side support if you subscribe through an app store, mandatory JAMS arbitration and a class action waiver
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Very low. You sign up without a credit card and can record a visit straight away; Freed advertises that it fits a clinic's workflow in minutes rather than months. The Chrome extension installs in under a minute, needs no IT support and requires no configuration on the EHR side, and there is no API to integrate or server to deploy. Front Desk is quoted at 30 minutes to set up, with guided call forwarding and a knowledge base generated from the clinic's own website. The only documented friction is browser or device microphone permissions, and keeping the Freed tab active while recording.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are patient audio recordings kept?
No. Recordings are held temporarily in a secure, HIPAA-compliant way until the note summary and quality checks are finished, then deleted automatically. You can also choose in the platform settings to have patient recordings deleted immediately once they have been processed.
How long are my notes kept?
You choose: keep notes indefinitely, or have them deleted automatically after 30 days. The switch sits in your account settings. Notes removed by the 30-day rule are not recoverable, and data deleted that way lingers for a further seven days in the backup system before being purged.
Does Freed train its AI on my patient data?
Never on protected health information. The models learn only from de-identified notes stripped of patient identifiers. Training on Your Data more broadly is permitted by the Terms of Use only with consent you give through the platform settings, and Learned Output, Voice ID and Auto Learn are all opt-in or off by default.
Is Freed HIPAA-compliant?
Yes. Freed states it is HIPAA- and HITECH-compliant and SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2 certified, encrypts data with AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.2-1.3 in transit, follows OWASP secure coding standards and FIPS PUB 140-2, and signs Business Associate Agreements with healthcare organisations.
Which EHRs does it work with?
Dozens of browser-based EHRs through the Chrome extension. Freed names SimplePractice, PracticeFusion, Tebra, Elation, Therapy Notes, Athena, Optimantra, Kipu, Aarista and DrChrono as the ones it works best with. EHR push requires the Premier tier, and direct integration is offered to group accounts only.
What languages can it handle?
Freed can capture the consultation in Spanish, Mandarin, Italian, German, Russian, Japanese, French, Korean, Thai, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Polish and Indonesian, translating the resulting note into English. Front Desk conducts calls in the patient's preferred language.
Is there a free trial, and is there a free plan?
There is a seven-day free trial with no credit card required, but no permanent free plan. Residents, students and trainees can apply for the Core tier free of charge, and trainees can get 50% off Premier by sending proof of enrolment to support@getfreed.ai.
Do I need my patient's consent to use it?
Freed does not require it but recommends it as best practice, noting that some jurisdictions may. It supplies a sample verbal script, suggests waiting-room signage or intake acknowledgements, and lets you insert a fixed consent statement into every note through your template.
Is there an API?
No. Freed publishes no public API and no developer documentation. Integration happens through the Chrome extension, the mobile apps and the Zoom app, not through code.
How do I delete my account permanently?
Email support@getfreed.ai from the address linked to your account. Freed may ask why, in order to confirm the request. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone: all notes and data are removed once the account is deleted.
Conclusion

Should you pick Freed?

Freed is a mature, widely adopted tool inside a narrow niche, and it knows exactly what that niche is. With 26,000+ clinicians, 1,300+ clinics and more than two million notes processed monthly, it has the usage base to back its accuracy claims, and its refusal to chase large hospital systems shows up in the product: a low entry price, a setup measured in minutes rather than months, and support staffed by humans in the United States.

The security file is genuinely solid on the American side. SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2, HIPAA, HITECH, OWASP and FIPS 140-2, AES-256 at rest, no training on protected health information, automatic deletion of audio once the note is written, and a retention switch the clinician actually controls. Data ownership stays with the practice, and export survives the end of the contract.

The European blind spot is just as clear. Freed makes no GDPR claim, designates no Article 27 representative, publishes no DPA and hosts everything in the United States, telling non-US users in as many words that they use the service at their own risk. For a European practice handling patient data, that is not a detail to negotiate around.

Parts of the range are still being built. Front Desk is in beta and its Advanced tier is unreleased, code synchronisation into the EHR is announced rather than shipped, and there is no public API, so Freed is a tool you use as supplied rather than one you build on. One practical caution: the pricing page currently shows the Core tier costing more annually than monthly, which looks like a page error — worth confirming before you subscribe.
