Freeletics
Freeletics is a mobile AI Coach app from German publisher Freeletics GmbH that builds and weekly re-adjusts personalized bodyweight, gym, HIIT and running plans, plus nutrition and mindset programs, for people training without a human trainer.
What is Freeletics?
Freeletics is a digital fitness coaching app published by Freeletics GmbH in Munich and launched in 2013. Its press page positions it as the leading provider of AI-based fitness and lifestyle coaching and as the most well-known fitness app in Europe, claiming 100+ employees and availability in 10 languages and 175 countries. Usage figures are not consistent across the site: the press page states 59 million users, the homepage 60 million; the homepage counts 700+ exercises, while the subscription features block on the purchase page counts 300+. The publisher also claims 450 million completed sessions, 4 trillion workout combinations and 400k+ five-star reviews, plus an App Store 'App of the Day' and a Google Play 'Editor's choice' distinction.
The core of the product is an algorithmic AI Coach that composes each training week and re-adjusts it from the feedback given after every session. The site presents it as an adaptive algorithm backed by human expertise: Your AI Coach & its adaptable algorithm are backed by a team of sports scientists, ensuring each workout is personalized to your development. Users set their training days, location (home, gym, outdoors), equipment and physical limitations, and a 2x2 function swaps out all running and distance exercises for the day in one gesture. Training Journeys are complete 8- or 12-week programs; Weights Journeys focus on compound movements such as the squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press and row, and need only a barbell, pull-up bar, squat rack and bench.
Around the Training Coach sit a Nutrition Coach, delivered as a separate Freeletics Nutrition app producing meal plans, recipes and shopping lists, and a Mindset Coach with 100+ audio sessions available in English only. Coach+ is a conversational assistant plugged into an OpenAI model (OpenAI Ireland Ltd.) and fed anonymized metrics, while Motion Tracking is a paid camera-based form analysis processed locally on the device.
The wider ecosystem includes a community forum, an ambassador program, the Freeletics Essentials equipment line, a Decathlon partnership, a business offer for employers, and a Super Bundle granting access to Calm, MapMyFitness, pliability and Skill Yoga. Scope limits matter: training happens in the iOS and Android apps only, the website covering onboarding, purchase and account management.

When to use Freeletics / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if Freeletics is the right fit.
When to use Freeletics
- Busy people with irregular schedules, who set the number of training days, the session length and the location the plan has to fit into
- Home trainees with no equipment at all, since a large share of the plans are bodyweight only and sessions run 10 to 30 minutes
- Gym-goers targeting muscle gain, through Weights Journeys built on compound lifts and needing only a barbell, pull-up bar, squat rack and bench
- Beginners and returners chasing weight loss, muscle gain or general fitness who want structure without paying for individual human supervision
- Employers looking for a wellbeing perk, through the 'For Businesses' offer and its corporate discount
When not to use Freeletics
- Anyone under 18: clause 2.2 of the terms requires users to be at least 18 years old and to have full legal capacity
- Businesses and professionals wanting a self-serve B2B tool, since the terms state that Freeletics is intended exclusively for consumers
- People needing a medical device or clinical follow-up: the app carries health safety notices (terms, clause 4) and provides no medical supervision
- Coaches or developers wanting to drive their own clients programmatically, as there is no public API, no export and no programmable integration
- Anyone expecting to train from a browser: training happens in the mobile app only, and the Mindset Coach audio content exists in English alone
How to use Freeletics
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Start from the website's 'Start your plan now' button, which opens the onboarding and plan selection flow
- Answer the onboarding questions on your goal, fitness level, sex, date of birth, height, weight and preferred training modalities
- Create an account with an email address, Google or Apple, then confirm through the emailed link, valid 7 days, after which the data is erased
- Choose a plan and subscribe at checkout on the site, or buy through the App Store or Google Play
- Download the Freeletics app on iOS or Android and sign in with the same account
- Optionally install Freeletics Nutrition separately, sign in with the same account and answer its questions on goals, preferences and body
- Connect Apple Health Kit, Google Health Connect or Strava if you want your activities synced
- Before starting each new week, adjust the plan: equipment, running, number of training days and any limitations
- After each session, answer the feedback prompts ('How was your technique?', 'How exhausting was the session?') so the Coach re-adjusts
- Manage the subscription in the account settings: renewal is automatic, cancellation takes effect without notice, and an initial purchase is covered by a 14-day money-back guarantee through support
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Genuine personalization: the weekly plan is recalculated from the user's own feedback on technique, exertion and session length
- No equipment required for a large share of the plans, with coverage spanning bodyweight, gym, free weights, running, HIIT, nutrition and mindset
- European publisher established in Germany: the GDPR applies directly, a Data Protection Officer is appointed and the privacy policy is detailed and dated
- Contractual commitment from the LLM partner to a zero-retention, zero-training policy on Coach+ queries, and Motion Tracking images processed locally with nothing stored or transmitted
- A permanent free tier gives access to basic functions (terms, clause 3.1), so the app can be used without subscribing
- 14-day money-back guarantee on an initial purchase, and cancellation possible at any time without notice in the account settings
- Scale and track record: launched in 2013, 10 interface languages, 175 countries, 450 million sessions and 400k+ five-star reviews claimed by the publisher
Cons
- No price is published anywhere on the site: amounts are loaded client-side and depend on country and current promotions, which rules out any comparison before onboarding
- No public API and no developer documentation, and no published DPA either
- Freeletics stores Coach+ conversation history and trains Coach+ on aggregated or de-identified fitness data collected from its users
- Usage figures contradict each other between pages of the same site: 60 million users on the homepage against 59 million on the press page, 700+ exercises against 300+ in the subscription features block
- Training happens in the mobile app only, the site being limited to onboarding, purchase and account management, and the legal and pricing pages are JavaScript-rendered, so their content is invisible without script execution
- Mindset Coach audio content is in English only, even when the app is used in another language
- Consumers aged 18 and over only, Lifetime purchases non-refundable unless the law provides otherwise, and numerous third-party marketing trackers whose opt-out runs through the settings or an email to privacy@freeletics.com
Pricing & Plans
Freeletics operates on a freemium model. A permanently free tier exists: under clause 3.1 of the terms, a user who uses the service free of charge only has access to certain basic functions. Full access requires a paid subscription, offered as Training Coach, Training + Nutrition Bundle, Body & Mind Bundle, Super Bundle and Lifetime Access, alongside the free Free Experience tier. No price is published on the website: no amount appears in the static HTML, in the site's data endpoints or in its CMS, because prices are loaded client-side and vary by country and by the promotion running at the time. No lowest price point and no currency can therefore be stated here. The interface exposes weekly, monthly and yearly billing intervals as well as a one-off Lifetime payment, allows instalment payment on certain offers, and indicates that prices are shown including VAT. A 14-day money-back guarantee covers an initial purchase, while Lifetime Access is non-refundable unless the law provides otherwise; purchases made through the App Store or Google Play follow those stores' own refund rules.

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Freeletics handles your data.
GDPR overview
Implementation is concrete and documented. Freeletics GmbH is established in Germany, so the GDPR applies directly and no Article 27 representative is designated or needed. The privacy policy, effective 4 February 2026, is organized processing by processing, each with its retention period and its legal basis: Article 6(1)(a) for consent, 6(1)(b) for contract performance, 9(2)(a) for health data. Rights are listed explicitly: access (Art. 15), rectification (16), erasure (17), restriction (18), portability (20), objection (21), withdrawal of consent at any time including consents predating the GDPR, and complaint to a supervisory authority. Transfers outside the EU rely on standard contractual clauses (Art. 44 ff.), with Google certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, and Article 26 joint controllership is declared with Meta Platforms Ireland for fan pages. A separate CCPA section covers California residents. No customer DPA is published: the product is B2C. Contact: privacy@freeletics.com.
Who owns the data?
Freeletics GmbH, Berg-am-Laim-Straße 111, Munich, represented by Managing Director Daniel Sobhani, is the data controller; an external Data Protection Officer at the same address is reachable at privacy@freeletics.com. The privacy policy states that all data entered into an account is stored in a Freeletics GmbH database, with Amazon Web Services acting as processor. Ownership of the platform content stays with Freeletics: the terms grant a simple, non-transferable right of use that lapses when access ends, typically after a cancelled subscription. Content users upload themselves, such as a profile picture or community posts, remains theirs, but they must hold the necessary rights. Freeletics also retains Coach+ conversation history to evaluate and improve that feature.
Reuse rights
Training data feeds a complex algorithm that compares a user's performance with that of similar users in order to recalculate the weekly plan. Coach+ questions are forwarded to an OpenAI interface (OpenAI Ireland Ltd.) together with anonymized Freeletics metrics such as age, sex, weight and goal, and Freeletics states that its LLM partner adheres to a zero-retention, zero-training policy on those queries and metrics. Freeletics itself trains Coach+ only on proprietary data, using aggregated or de-identified fitness data; consent is required before any Coach+ interaction and can be revoked at any time, together with deletion of Coach+ data, in the app profile settings under Privacy. Motion Tracking images are processed locally on the device, with no image or video stored or transmitted and no biometric data in the sense of Article 9 GDPR. Data coming from Apple Health Kit, Google Health Connect and Strava is not used for advertising purposes. Marketing and analytics partners include Google Analytics, Amplitude, AppsFlyer, Clevertap, Firebase, Meta, Snap, TikTok, Reddit and Remerge, with opt-out through the app settings or an email to privacy@freeletics.com. Under the CCPA, Freeletics declares that it does not sell personal information without a prior right to object. On the user side, the terms grant only a personal right of use over Freeletics content: workouts, videos and training plans may not be reused or redistributed freely, and that right ends with the subscription.

Hosting summary
Account data is stored in a Freeletics GmbH database, with Amazon Web Services named in the privacy policy as an order processor involving a data transfer to a third country, the USA, covered by EU standard contractual clauses. Freeletics declares encryption for the transfer and the storage of all types of data. For Coach+, OpenAI Ireland Ltd. processes data originating from the EEA or Switzerland, with intra-group transfers covered by the European Commission's standard contractual clauses of 4 June 2021 or by an adequacy decision. Google Ireland Limited, for Analytics, Firebase, YouTube and Health Connect, acts as processor, with transfers to the USA under standard contractual clauses and certification under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. What is not said matters as much: no primary hosting country in Europe is named and no hosting region in the commercial sense is declared, only transfer destinations. As a network observation rather than a statement by the publisher, the website itself resolves to an IP address in Ireland (63.35.79.4, AWS AS16509, Dublin).
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Freeletics.
- No price is shown before the onboarding: the amount appears only at the end of the flow and depends on your country and on the promotion running at the time, so the decision is made once you are already invested in the process
- Subscriptions renew automatically and the charge is triggered 24 hours before the billing period begins; the 14-day right of withdrawal covers new subscriptions only, not renewals, and Lifetime purchases are non-refundable unless the law provides otherwise
- Subscriptions bought through the App Store or Google Play must be cancelled there, and each subscription has to be cancelled separately, an easy way to keep paying for a bundle you have stopped using
- Coach+ forwards questions to an OpenAI interface: the site explicitly asks users not to enter identifying data, and Freeletics keeps the conversation history to evaluate and improve the feature
- Numerous third-party marketing trackers are involved, with transfers to the United States under standard contractual clauses; opting out requires the app settings or an email to privacy@freeletics.com
- According to the retention tables in the privacy policy, connection IP addresses and sex are kept for an indefinite period
- The app is not a medical device: clause 4 of the terms carries health safety notices, and an algorithm that keeps raising intensity can encourage overtraining or replace a medical opinion that a person actually needs, so delegating all judgement about your own body to a coaching app is a risk in itself
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Very low: no technical skill is required. The path is an onboarding questionnaire, account creation by email, Google or Apple, confirmation through a link valid for 7 days, then downloading the app on iOS or Android. The Nutrition Coach is a second app to install separately with the same account. Health integrations are enabled from the device settings for Apple Health Kit and Google Health Connect, and by explicit consent for Strava, while Motion Tracking requires camera access. There is no installation, no server configuration and no API key.

Should you pick Freeletics?
Freeletics is a mature product rather than a recent AI launch: live since 2013, it claims 60 million users on its homepage, 59 million on its press page, and 450 million completed sessions. Its value lies in algorithmic personalization backed by a team of sports scientists, extended since by Coach+, a conversational assistant running on an OpenAI model, and by camera-based Motion Tracking processed locally on the device.
The legal framework is one of the stronger points. The publisher is established in Germany, so the GDPR applies directly; a Data Protection Officer is appointed, the privacy policy is dated 4 February 2026 and structured processing by processing, and the LLM partner is contractually bound to a zero-retention, zero-training policy on Coach+ queries.
The main blind spot is commercial. No price appears anywhere on the public site: amounts are loaded client-side and depend on the country and on the promotion running at the time, so no comparison is possible before going through the onboarding. Other reservations follow: no public API and no developer documentation, no published DPA, Mindset Coach audio in English only, Coach+ conversation history retained by Freeletics, and Coach+ trained on aggregated or de-identified user fitness data. Usage figures also contradict each other between pages of the same site, which is worth keeping in mind when reading the publisher's claims.
In practice, Freeletics suits an individual who wants an adaptive training program without a gym membership or a human trainer, is comfortable training entirely inside a mobile app, and accepts discovering the price only at the end of the sign-up flow. It is not suited to minors, to professional or B2B use, or to anyone needing clinical supervision or programmatic access to their own data.
