Overview

What is Mintlify?

Mintlify is a hosted knowledge platform for product documentation, API references and knowledge bases. Its 2026 positioning, the knowledge infrastructure agents build on, reflects a shift the company says it can measure: close to half of documentation traffic now comes from AI agents and AI-assisted workflows rather than from people browsing pages. The product is built for that audience as much as for the human one.

There are two ways to write. Teams that live in Git connect a repository, GitHub, GitHub Enterprise Server, GitLab or Bitbucket Cloud, and treat docs as code, with preview deployments and CI checks on every pull request. Everyone else works in a collaborative web editor with live preview, comments, suggestions and pull-request publishing, while a CLI handles local previews. A single docs.json file drives navigation, appearance, fonts and redirects, and API references generate themselves from an OpenAPI, AsyncAPI or GraphQL specification.

The AI layer is what sets Mintlify apart. A configurable assistant sits on the published site and can be embedded elsewhere as a widget. A writing agent, triggered from the API or from preset automations, keeps pages up to date and can be added to Slack. Three documented MCP servers, admin, search and the Mintlify Index, let coding agents query the documentation directly, alongside llms.txt, skill.md and Markdown export. Analytics cover traffic, searches, assistant conversations and engagement, with CSV export and streaming to Amazon S3.

Governance scales with the plan: reader authentication by password, OAuth, JWT or SSO; dashboard SSO, SCIM, roles, audit logs, session IP allowlisting and BYOK on the dashboard side; custom domains, subpath deployments, reverse proxies, self-hosting and EU hosting for teams with infrastructure constraints.

Founded in 2022 by Han Wang and Hahnbee Lee, who met at Cornell, and part of Y Combinator's W22 batch, Mintlify claims more than 20,000 companies, 300 million visitors and 2 billion agent visits over a year at 99.99% uptime. Named customers with published case studies include Anthropic, Coinbase, HubSpot, AT&T, Perplexity and Replit.

What it does

  • Publish product documentation and an API reference straight from a Git repository
  • Let an AI assistant answer reader questions inside the published documentation
  • Keep pages current automatically with a writing agent and preset automations
  • Expose documentation to AI agents through MCP servers, llms.txt, skill.md and Markdown export
  • Measure human and agent traffic, searches and assistant conversations
  • Write together in a web editor with live preview and pull-request publishing
  • Trigger deployments, previews and agent jobs from the public REST API

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • A contractual no-training commitment on customer data, extended to the third-party LLM providers
  • A published sub-processor list of 18 entries, each with its role and privacy policy
  • Named GDPR Article 27 representatives for the EU and the UK, plus a named DPO with a direct email
  • Native docs-as-code: Git end to end, pull-request previews and CI checks
  • A public REST API and three MCP servers, so the platform is drivable by code and by agents
  • Named, verifiable customer references including Anthropic, Coinbase, HubSpot, AT&T, Perplexity and Replit
  • A permanently free Starter plan with five seats, plus 99.99% claimed uptime and a public status page

Cons

  • A steep jump from Starter at $0 to Pro at $450 per month billed annually, with nothing in between
  • The most structural features sit behind an Enterprise quote: SSO, SCIM, RBAC, audit logs, EU hosting, self-hosting, BYOK, SLA
  • AI features are metered in credits, with overage at $0.01 per credit, so the real bill is hard to anticipate
  • No security certification is readable first-party: the trust center is a client-rendered Drata page
  • Pricing amounts and the pricing FAQ answers are rendered in JavaScript and never reach the served HTML
  • No legal notice page: the company name and address appear only in the terms and the privacy policy
  • No mobile app, no browser extension, and an English-only interface across the pages reviewed
Pricing

Pricing & Plans

Mintlify operates on a freemium model. The Starter plan is permanently free of charge: $0 per month, five editor seats, and access to the full platform, including a custom domain, the web editor, reader authentication, an MCP server and the API playground. The first paid tier is Pro, at $450 per month on an annual commitment, or $540 per month when billed monthly, with unlimited editor seats. Enterprise pricing is quote-based. AI features are metered in credits: 10,000 credits are included each month, additional usage is billed at $0.01 per credit, credit packs are available and committed volumes can be negotiated; a hard spending cap can be set from the dashboard, or overages disabled entirely. Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Mintlify handles your data.

GDPR overview

GDPR implementation is concrete rather than declarative. The privacy policy, updated and reviewed on 16 June 2026, sets out legal bases under both the GDPR and the UK GDPR. Mintlify has appointed a named DPO, Han Wang, at security@mintlify.com and, being established outside the EU and the UK, Article 27 representatives in both: Instant EU GDPR Representative Ltd in Lucan, Co. Dublin, and GDPRLocal Ltd in Brighton, each with a dedicated portal. Data subject rights are listed in full, from access and copy to rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection and withdrawal of consent, and are exercised through a dedicated request form. International transfers rely on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses, the UK IDTA and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, with transfer impact assessments. An EU DPA is available through the trust center; CCPA and Virginia CDPA are covered separately.

Who owns the data?

Mintlify's terms draw a clean line between Customer Data and the Service. Everything a customer uploads, writes or syncs into the platform stays theirs: the terms state that the customer retains all right, title and interest in the Customer Data, including the intellectual property rights in it. Mintlify keeps ownership of the Service itself, its software and its own intellectual property. The customer alone answers for the accuracy, quality, legality and ownership of what it uploads. One reservation is worth noting: Mintlify may use a customer's name and logo as a commercial reference. Where the customer acts as controller or processor, an EU data processing agreement is available through the trust center.

Reuse rights

Because the customer keeps all right, title and interest in its Customer Data, nothing in the terms requires Mintlify's permission to reuse that content elsewhere: teams can export it and republish it as they see fit, and the platform ships Markdown, PDF and offline exports that make the portability practical. Mintlify's own use is deliberately narrow. The terms commit the company not to use Customer Data to train, fine-tune, improve or develop large language models, generative AI models or machine learning models, and that prohibition is passed on to the third-party providers named in the supplier terms, Anthropic, OpenAI and Google Gemini, which may not use, store or retain customer content for training. The Slack integration follows the same rule: messages reach LLM providers for inference only. LLM middleware is disclosed too, with Helicone for cost tracking and OpenRouter for provider failover. Marketing and analytics processing is handled separately, through tools such as Google Tag Manager, HubSpot, Unify, Attribution, RB2B and Common Room.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Mintlify keeps personal data for as long as the purposes set out in its privacy policy require, and longer only where tax or accounting law demands it. The policy sets an explicit ceiling: no purpose requires keeping personal information beyond the period during which a user has an account. When the need ends, data is deleted or anonymized; where deletion is impossible, in backup archives for instance, the data is stored securely and isolated from any processing until deletion becomes possible. On termination, the account is deactivated or removed from active databases, with limited retention for fraud prevention, troubleshooting and legal obligations. Access, correction and deletion requests go through a DSAR form and the EU and UK portals. Slack integration data is kept only as long as needed, with an auditable session history. Data belonging to anyone under 18 is deleted promptly and the account deactivated.

Hosting summary

Mintlify, Inc. is established in the United States and states that most of its sub-processors are based there too. The published infrastructure providers are Amazon Web Services, Vercel, MongoDB Atlas and ClickHouse Cloud. EU hosting exists, but as an option on the Enterprise tier rather than a default, alongside self-hosting for teams that must keep documentation on their own infrastructure. Transfers out of Europe are covered by the European Commission's standard contractual clauses, the UK IDTA and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, backed by transfer impact assessments. On the technical side, the privacy policy lists encryption in transit and at rest, least-privilege access control, multi-factor authentication, network segmentation, logging, vulnerability scanning, code review and an incident response process. One caveat for anyone checking independently: the site's public IP address (76.76.21.21) belongs to an anycast web front end and says nothing about where customer data is actually stored.

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Mintlify.

  • The domain figstack.com redirects here: anyone searching for Figstack, this team's earlier and now discontinued tool, lands on a completely different product
  • Prices are animated in JavaScript on the pricing page; the amounts quoted here come from the served HTML and the page's own bundle, so confirm them before signing
  • No security certification is verifiable first-party, since the trust center is a client-rendered Drata page and the pricing FAQ answers never reach the served HTML
  • AI features are metered in credits, so the invoice exceeds the advertised price as soon as the 10,000 monthly credits are consumed
  • Data is hosted in the United States by default; EU hosting is an Enterprise option, not the standard setting
  • The company name and address appear only inside the terms and the privacy policy, on no legal notice page, and no ultimate beneficial owner is published
  • Handing documentation to a writing agent can quietly erode a team's editorial discipline: automatically maintained pages still need a human reviewer, and readers who always ask the assistant rather than read the page retain less of what they learn
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Two entry points, two very different levels. Writing in the web editor needs no technical skill: sign up, type, publish. The docs-as-code route means installing the CLI, previewing locally, configuring docs.json and wiring CI checks and preview deployments, which is comfortable for any developer, and a published Quickstart and 'Migrate to Mintlify' guide smooth the path. API references generate from an existing OpenAPI, AsyncAPI or GraphQL specification. Going further, with SSO, SCIM, a reverse proxy, subpath deployment or self-hosting, calls for an infrastructure team. Migration services and Slack support are available on the higher tiers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Mintlify for?
Mintlify is used to publish and maintain product documentation and API references that are readable both by people and by AI agents. It combines Git-based publishing, a collaborative web editor, an AI assistant on the published site and MCP servers that let agents query the content directly.
Is there a free plan?
Yes. The Starter plan costs $0 per month, includes five editor seats and gives access to the full platform, with a custom domain, the web editor, reader authentication, an MCP server and the API playground. No credit card is required, and the first month of AI credits is included.
How much does the first paid tier cost?
The Pro plan is $450 per month on an annual commitment, or $540 per month when billed monthly, with unlimited editor seats. Enterprise pricing is quote-based. AI features are metered separately, with 10,000 credits included each month and overage at $0.01 per credit.
Is my content used to train AI models?
No. The terms commit Mintlify not to use Customer Data to train, fine-tune, improve or develop large language models or machine learning models, and the same prohibition is imposed on the third-party LLM providers named in the supplier terms, Anthropic, OpenAI and Google Gemini.
Is there an API?
Yes. Mintlify documents a public REST API covering deployment triggers and status, previews, automations, agent jobs and an endpoint that flags AI-sounding prose. Three MCP servers are also documented: an admin server, a search server and the Mintlify Index.
Which Git repositories are supported?
GitHub, GitHub Enterprise Server, GitLab and Bitbucket Cloud, including monorepo and multi-repository setups, with preview deployments and CI checks on pull requests.
Is Mintlify GDPR compliant?
The privacy policy sets out legal bases under the GDPR and the UK GDPR, names a DPO (Han Wang), and lists Article 27 representatives for the EU and the UK. Transfers rely on standard contractual clauses, the UK IDTA and the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, and an EU data processing agreement is available.
Where is the data hosted?
In the United States by default: Mintlify, Inc. is established there and states that most of its sub-processors are too. EU hosting is offered as an option on the Enterprise tier, as is self-hosting.
Is the list of sub-processors public?
Yes. Mintlify publishes a full list of 18 sub-processors, each with its role, including the infrastructure providers Amazon Web Services, Vercel, MongoDB Atlas and ClickHouse Cloud, and the AI providers Anthropic, OpenAI and Google Gemini.
Is there a minimum age?
Yes, the service is reserved for users aged 18 and over. The privacy policy states that accounts belonging to anyone under 18 are deactivated and the data deleted promptly.
Conclusion

Should you pick Mintlify?

Mintlify is a mature product with an unusually clear thesis: documentation is no longer only something people read, it is the interface a product exposes to AI agents. Everything follows from that, from the MCP servers, llms.txt and skill.md to the embedded assistant, the writing agent that keeps pages current and the analytics that separate human traffic from agent traffic. Backed by $67M raised and named case studies from Anthropic, Coinbase, HubSpot and AT&T, it is not a bet on an unproven company.

Legal transparency is above average for the category. Sub-processors are published in full, Article 27 representatives are named for the EU and the UK, a DPO is reachable directly, and the terms rule out training on customer data, a ban that extends to the LLM providers behind the AI features.

The main reservation is commercial. Between a free Starter plan capped at five seats and a Pro tier at $450 per month there is nothing, and the governance features most buyers evaluate, SSO, SCIM, audit logs, EU hosting, self-hosting and the SLA, appear only in an Enterprise quote. Credit-metered AI usage adds a variable on top. A second reservation is verification: the pricing amounts, the pricing FAQ and the security trust center are all rendered client-side, so claims about certifications or trial length cannot be checked from the served pages.

One note for anyone arriving here from an old link: the domain figstack.com now redirects to Mintlify. Figstack was this team's earlier code-explanation tool and no longer exists.

For teams that already write docs as code and want them consumable by agents, Mintlify is a strong, thoroughly documented choice, provided the jump to $450 per month fits the budget.
