Overview

What is NaturalReader?

NaturalReader is an AI text-to-speech platform published by NaturalSoft Limited, a company founded in Vancouver and now based in Richmond, British Columbia. The product has been around for roughly two decades and the publisher claims more than 10 million users a year and over 6,000 organisations, showing logos such as the United Nations, the Federal Aviation Administration and the province of Ontario.

The tool converts almost any source into audio: PDFs, Word documents, ePub files, web pages, pasted text, images, and printed books through an OCR camera scanner. It offers more than 200 AI voices across 90+ languages, built on Azure models on the Plus plan and on Gemini and OpenAI models on the Pro plan. Voice Design lets you shape tone, emotion, delivery and accent with a written prompt or a ready-made preset, and voice cloning turns a short recording into a personal voice able to speak any supported language.

Three product lines sit side by side. Personal is the reading companion: a web app, iOS and Android apps and a Chrome extension, with MP3 export, an AI text filter that strips menus and ads, annotations, a pronunciation editor, closed captions, word-by-word highlighting and a dyslexia-friendly font. It bundles the ReadAI study tools — AI Podcast, AI Recap, AI Chat, AI Quizzes, AI Q&A and screenshot analysis of equations, tables and graphs. Commercial is a separate voiceover studio whose output carries a commercial licence, adding ElevenLabs voices, script translation, multi-voice projects and video voiceover, billed in monthly character credits. EDU serves schools with group licences from five students or a site licence for a whole institution, plus classroom management and a shared document library.

The boundary between them matters: audio made on a Personal plan is licensed for private listening only, and any public, internal or commercial distribution requires the Commercial subscription. On privacy, the publisher states repeatedly that documents are used only to generate audio and never to train AI models, that no data is sold and that no advertising is shown.

Audience

When to use NaturalReader / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if NaturalReader is the right fit.

When to use NaturalReader

  • Students and university learners with heavy reading loads who would rather listen to textbooks, papers and PDFs
  • Readers with dyslexia, ADHD or low vision who need word-by-word highlighting, a dyslexia font and captions
  • Schools and districts looking for group or site licences with centralised student and classroom management
  • Content creators, YouTubers and e-learning producers who need voiceovers cleared for public use
  • Busy professionals who want to listen to reports, emails and long documents while commuting

When not to use NaturalReader

  • Developers who want to embed speech synthesis in their own product: no API documentation is published
  • Teams that require a signed data processing agreement or a published subprocessor list before onboarding a vendor
  • Organisations that must keep personal data inside the European Union: processing takes place in Canada
  • Anyone planning to publish audio made on a Personal plan, since public and even internal use requires the separate Commercial product
  • Users looking for speech-to-text transcription: NaturalReader works the other way round

Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how NaturalReader handles your data.

GDPR overview

NaturalReader makes explicit compliance claims. The mobile app page states that the service is fully compliant with GDPR, HIPAA and privacy regulations, and the policies page claims compliance with FERPA, COPPA and New York Education Law 2-D in the United States and with the GDPR in Europe. The privacy policy, published as a PDF, carries a dedicated section on the legal basis for processing under the GDPR — contract, consent, legitimate interest, payment and legal obligation — and lists data-subject rights: access, rectification, erasure, objection, restriction, portability, withdrawal of consent and complaint to an EEA supervisory authority. Two gaps stand out: the policy is dated 12 October 2020, well before the current AI features, and no Article 27 EU representative, data protection officer or data processing agreement is named anywhere on the site.

Who owns the data?

The end-user licence agreement is explicit: NaturalSoft owns the underlying technology of the product, but you own all of the content and information conveyed or transmitted through it. Documents you upload therefore remain yours. What changes with the plan is the licence attached to the audio the tool produces. Files generated on a Personal, Mobile or EDU plan are licensed for your own private listening and may not be redistributed. Only audio produced under a paid Commercial subscription carries a licence for public and commercial use. For personal data, the privacy policy states that Naturalsoft Ltd acts as the data controller.

Reuse rights

What you may do with the audio depends entirely on the plan. Under the Personal, Mobile and EDU versions, files are licensed for private listening only: they cannot be published on a website or in a YouTube video, redistributed, or made available to other people or systems. The publisher spells out that internal and non-profit uses, such as training videos or messaging systems, still require a commercial licence. A paid NaturalReader Commercial subscription lifts that restriction and licenses the audio for public, business and commercial use, including advertising, e-learning, podcasts and audiobooks. On the vendor side, uploaded documents are used only to generate audio, never to train AI models, and are never sold to advertisers.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Personal data is kept only as long as necessary for the purposes set out in the privacy policy, and beyond that to meet legal obligations, resolve disputes and enforce agreements. Usage data is generally retained for a shorter period, unless it is used to strengthen security, improve the service or comply with a legal duty. The only precise figures concern student accounts: information is kept while the account is active, deleting a student account destroys all of its account information at the same time, and documents uploaded by a student account are deleted automatically one year after upload. No equivalent figure is published for consumer or commercial accounts, so the retention period for an ordinary user's documents is not documented.
Trains on customer data
No

Hosting summary

The privacy policy states plainly that users located outside Canada and the United States have their data, including personal data, transferred to Canada and processed there. Canada is therefore the jurisdiction governing the processing, and no European hosting option or regional data residency choice is documented anywhere on the site. No data centre, cloud provider or hosting certification is named: the homepage shows 'Data Privacy', 'Security Certified' and 'Encrypted' badges, but no standard such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001 is cited to support them. Technically, the domain resolves to an Amazon address served from a Zurich edge node and images are delivered from an Amazon S3 bucket, which points to a content delivery network rather than to the actual location of stored user data. Organisations subject to EU data residency requirements should note the gap between the GDPR compliance claim displayed on the site and the absence of an EU processing option, a data processing agreement or a published list of subprocessors.

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting NaturalReader.

  • Listening is not reading: leaning on AI narration for study can weaken close reading and retention if it replaces the text instead of supporting it
  • AI voices mispronounce names and technical terms, and a listener catches far fewer of those errors than a reader would; the pronunciation editor exists for that reason
  • Voice cloning invites misuse: a cloned voice can impersonate someone if the sample was not yours to use
  • Publishing audio made on a Personal plan anywhere, including a company intranet or a training module, breaches the licence, and it is an easy mistake to make
  • Subscriptions renew automatically by default, and Commercial plans are non-refundable
  • Documents you upload are processed in Canada, under a privacy policy last updated in October 2020
  • The site displays 'Security Certified' and 'End-to-End Encryption' badges without naming any standard or audit, so those claims cannot be verified
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Setup is minimal. The web app opens straight in a browser with no installation, no credit card and no account needed to start, and the mobile app can even be used without signing in. An email and password are only required to sync documents and listening progress across devices, and the Chrome extension installs in one click from the Chrome Web Store. There is no API key, no configuration file and no technical skill involved. Only an EDU deployment asks more: an administrator invites students and teachers, or registers the school's email domain for a site licence.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free version of NaturalReader?
Yes. The Free plan is permanent, needs no credit card and gives unlimited listening with the free voices. Plus AI voices are capped at five minutes a day and the AI features are limited, but voice cloning and annotations are included.
Are my documents used to train AI models?
No. The publisher states on the Personal product page and in the EDU FAQ that documents are only used to generate audio, are never used to train AI models and are not saved in ChatGPT.
Can I use the audio in a YouTube video or in company training?
Not with a Personal plan, which licenses audio for private listening only. Any public, commercial or internal redistribution, including non-profit training material and messaging systems, requires a NaturalReader Commercial subscription.
How many voices and languages are available?
The site advertises more than 200 AI voices across 90+ languages. Plus gives access to Azure voices, Pro adds Gemini and OpenAI voices, and the Commercial product also includes ElevenLabs.
Are there mobile apps and a browser extension?
Yes. There are iOS and Android apps plus a Chrome extension that reads emails, articles, research papers and Google Docs. The mobile app can be used without creating an account.
What is the refund policy?
Personal monthly subscriptions can be refunded up to three days after purchase or renewal, and yearly subscriptions up to seven days, on request. Commercial subscriptions are non-refundable and no pro-rata refund is offered.
How are Commercial credits counted?
Everything sent to the speech engine counts as a character, including letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation and symbols. The cost per character depends on the voice used, and extra credits can be bought if the monthly allowance runs out.
Where is my data processed?
The privacy policy states that data from users located outside Canada and the United States is transferred to Canada and processed there. No European hosting option is documented.
Is there an offer for schools?
Yes. NaturalReader EDU sells group licences from five students at 199 USD per year and site licences priced on enrolment from 1.50 USD per user per year, with classroom management and a shared document library.
Can I clone my own voice?
Yes. You can record or upload an audio sample, and the resulting voice can read in any of the 90+ supported languages. Cloning is available on the Personal side as well as in the Commercial product.
Conclusion

Should you pick NaturalReader?

NaturalReader is one of the older names in text to speech, and it shows in the breadth of what the platform now covers. The same publisher sells a reading companion for individuals, a voiceover studio for businesses and a licensing scheme for schools, all drawing on the same catalogue of more than 200 AI voices in 90+ languages built on Gemini, OpenAI, Azure and ElevenLabs models. For a student facing a stack of PDFs, a professional with a commute, or a reader with dyslexia or low vision, the free plan alone is already usable, and every voice can be tested before any payment.

The trade-off to understand before subscribing is the licence. Audio produced on a Personal plan is for private listening only: publishing it, or even using it in internal company training, requires the separate Commercial product, which is billed in character credits and is not refundable. The advertised 9.92 USD per month also assumes an annual commitment.

On data, the publisher's position is unusually clear for this category: documents are used only to generate audio and never to train models, nothing is sold to advertisers and no ads are shown. The paperwork behind that promise is thinner. The privacy policy dates from October 2020, several product generations ago, processing takes place in Canada, and there is no data processing agreement, no published subprocessor list and no Article 27 EU representative — points that matter to an organisation running a vendor review, far less so to an individual reader. In short, a mature, well-rounded and genuinely accessible reading and voiceover tool, best approached through its free plan, with the personal-versus-commercial licence boundary and the ageing compliance documentation as the two things to weigh against your own needs.
