Overview

What is Nimagna?

Nimagna is a desktop application built by Nimagna AG, a Swiss company founded in Zurich in 2021 by two ETH Zurich computer scientists who had previously sold their first venture, LiberoVision, to the world's leading TV graphics company. That broadcast background explains the product: Nimagna applies television production technique to ordinary video calls.

Once installed on Windows or macOS, the app registers a virtual camera device called Nimagna Camera. You load your material into a storyboard — PowerPoint or Keynote decks, PDFs, images, video files, screen shares, additional cameras — and the software composes a real-time 3D scene in which you appear on a virtual stage next to that content, at full height rather than boxed into a webcam thumbnail. Selecting Nimagna Camera in Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, Webex, Skype, Livestorm, Goldcast or almost any other conferencing tool sends that composed picture to your audience. Nothing changes on the audio side, which the virtual camera deliberately does not carry.

The part Nimagna calls AI is the director. Shot selection, reframing and camera movement happen automatically and live, described by the company as a Hollywood-style producer, director and camera crew rolled into software. You can interrupt it: a sparkle button pauses automatic direction while you answer a question, and the number keys force a fixed framing on the content, on you, or on both.

Three uses are promoted: live video presentations, webinars and online courses, and screen recording for product demos or asynchronous video messages. Recordings are written straight to the video folder of your own machine. There is no green screen, no studio and no editing step, which is the heart of the pitch.

Capability scales with the plan. The entry tier allows one camera and 720p output; the Pro tier adds multi-camera production, gesture control, a content camera for whiteboards, the full set of virtual stages and 1080p; Enterprise adds three or more cameras and branded custom stages. The product is actively maintained — release 25.1 introduced dynamic screen sharing and a web user portal — and is sold as a per-seat subscription after a 30-day trial. It runs on the desktop only: there is no mobile version, no browser version and no API.

What it does

  • Put yourself on screen alongside your slides, screen share or video instead of in a small webcam tile
  • Let an AI director frame the shots, switch angles and move the camera live, hands-free
  • Present from a 3D virtual stage with no green screen and no studio
  • Feed any video call — Teams, Zoom, Meet, Webex and most others — through a virtual camera device
  • Record polished videos locally for product demos, announcements and asynchronous messages
  • Run multi-camera shows, including a phone as an extra angle or a content camera pointed at a whiteboard
  • Drive the show hands-free using gesture control, a presentation remote or keyboard shortcuts

When to use Nimagna / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if Nimagna is the right fit.

When to use Nimagna

  • Sales professionals running product demos and personalised video outreach who want to stand out from a grid of talking heads
  • Trainers, lecturers and online teachers who need an audience to stay engaged through a full session
  • Corporate communications and HR teams producing town halls, onboarding and internal video at a professional standard without an agency
  • Marketing teams hosting webinars and online events where the quality of the brand's on-screen presence matters
  • Independent consultants and creators who present regularly but cannot justify a studio or a video editor

When not to use Nimagna

  • Anyone working from a phone or tablet: Nimagna is a desktop-only application for Windows and macOS
  • Users on modest hardware, particularly Intel Macs, which the publisher itself flags as delivering suboptimal performance
  • Teams looking for a permanently free tool, since the 30-day trial is followed by a paid subscription with no free tier
  • Developers wanting to automate video production: no API or SDK is documented anywhere on the site
  • Anyone shopping for a post-production video editor or a generative text-to-video tool, which this is not

How to use Nimagna

A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.

  1. Check your machine first: Windows 10 or 11 64-bit with an i5 and 8 GB of RAM, or macOS 12.3 with Apple Silicon — Nimagna warns that Intel Macs perform poorly
  2. Download the installer for Windows, Mac Apple Silicon or Mac Intel from the download page and install it
  3. Launch the app, register an account and follow the guided onboarding
  4. On macOS, grant the system permissions the app requests, including installation of the Nimagna Camera; on Windows with Norton 360, allow MainApplication.exe and NimagnaService.exe through the firewall
  5. Build your storyboard: add slides, PDFs, images, videos, screen shares and cameras with the buttons on the left, then reorder them by drag and drop
  6. In Teams, Zoom or Meet, open the device settings and select Nimagna Camera as your camera; leave the audio settings untouched
  7. Frame yourself so that you fill the camera image, then use the Output button to send your show into the meeting
  8. Press F5 for presenter mode and advance slides with Page-Down, the right arrow key, a presentation remote or gesture control
  9. Take over from the automatic director when you need to: the sparkle button or the 0 key pauses it, and keys 1, 2 and 3 force a specific framing
  10. Press Record to capture the show locally after a three-second countdown; the file lands in your system video folder

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Works through a virtual camera, so nothing changes in your meeting stack and your audience installs nothing
  • No green screen, studio or editing skill required, and the automatic director means there is nothing to operate while you speak
  • A 30-day trial of the full product, with unlimited meetings and unlimited duration on every plan
  • Recordings stay on your own machine and the resulting file is immediately usable anywhere
  • Pricing is public and precise, including the difference between monthly and annual commitment
  • A clearly identified Swiss publisher, with a company registration number, complete legal pages and a named data protection officer
  • Serious operational documentation: a detailed FAQ, a step-by-step guide, product videos and dated release notes

Cons

  • Desktop only: no mobile app and no browser version of the product
  • Demanding hardware requirements, with a dedicated GPU recommended on Windows and Intel Macs flagged as underperforming by the publisher itself
  • No permanently free plan once the 30-day trial ends
  • A steep gap between tiers: multi-camera, gesture control, the content camera and 1080p all sit behind the €59 Pro plan
  • No API or SDK, so nothing can be automated or integrated programmatically
  • Audio is not carried by the virtual camera and has to be configured separately in the meeting tool
  • Fees are non-refundable and non-cancellable under the terms of service

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Nimagna handles your data.

GDPR overview

Nimagna publishes no claim of GDPR compliance. Its privacy policy, effective 20 June 2024, states that the company is guided primarily by Swiss law, the Federal Act on Data Protection. The GDPR appears exactly once, to designate Nimagna AG as the data controller "in accordance with the purposes" of the regulation — a designation, not a statement of compliance. A data protection officer is named and reachable at dpo@nimagna.com, with privacy@nimagna.com given as the channel for data protection concerns and a postal address published for both. Beyond that, the framework European buyers usually look for is missing: no Article 27 EU representative, although the company sits outside the EU and EEA; no data processing agreement offered; no subprocessor list. The only detailed rights section addresses the Californian CCPA rather than European data subject rights.

Who owns the data?

Nimagna's terms draw a clear line. You keep your User Content — the slides, images and video you load into the app — and you warrant that you hold the rights to it. Nimagna owns the software itself along with everything it ships: virtual stages, templates, graphics and documentation. One asymmetry deserves attention: any feedback you send is assigned to Nimagna under a worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free and transferable licence, usable for any purpose without compensation or credit. Recordings are written to the local video folder on your own machine, so a finished video never has to be uploaded to Nimagna to exist.

Reuse rights

Because recordings stay on your own computer, you can reuse, edit, publish and monetise them freely without asking Nimagna for anything. What flows the other way is telemetry: an analytics component built into the software sends usage data to Nimagna over encrypted HTTPS, and simply running the app counts as consent. Nimagna states that this analysis remains anonymous and never exposes personally identifiable data to third parties. Account data may be shared with service providers, affiliates and business partners, or transferred in a merger or asset sale. The privacy policy rules out selling personal data outright. Payments run through Mollie, with plan checkout hosted by Chargebee.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Nimagna gives no retention periods. The privacy policy commits to keeping personal data only as long as necessary for the purposes it sets out, with longer retention where legal obligations, disputes or the enforcement of its agreements require it. Usage data is kept for internal analysis and, in the policy's own words, generally for a shorter period, unless it serves security or functionality or the law demands otherwise. No figure in days, months or years appears anywhere. Session cookies expire when the browser closes, while persistent cookies remain until the user deletes them. Data belonging to a child under 13 is removed from the servers if the company becomes aware of it. Termination obliges the user to destroy their copies of the software, but no matching deletion commitment is made on Nimagna's side, and no self-service deletion process is described beyond contacting the company by email.

Hosting summary

Nimagna publishes no hosting location. The privacy policy says only that information is processed at the company's operating offices and in any other places where the parties involved in the processing are located, and accepts that data may cross into jurisdictions whose protection standards differ, promising adequate controls without naming them. No country, no region and no cloud provider is identified. What can be established from outside is limited to the marketing site, which is served by Wix infrastructure resolving to a United States address — and that says nothing about where product data lives. Two things are documented: telemetry travels to Nimagna over encrypted HTTPS, and video recordings are written locally to the user's own machine, so finished output never needs to leave the computer at all. The company and its offices are in Switzerland, though the site itself never uses that as a data protection argument. Buyers with a hosting requirement will have to ask directly.

Watch-outs

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Nimagna.

  • The software sends usage telemetry to Nimagna and simply running it counts as consent; no opt-out is described anywhere
  • The site never says, in either direction, whether customer content or recordings are used to train AI models
  • No hosting jurisdiction is published, no data processing agreement is offered and no subprocessor list exists — a real obstacle for regulated buyers
  • No GDPR compliance claim and no Article 27 EU representative, despite the publisher being established outside the EU and EEA
  • No security certification such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001 appears anywhere on the site
  • Fees are non-refundable and non-cancellable, so a wrong plan choice cannot be unwound mid-term
  • Leaning entirely on an automatic director can dull a presenter's own sense of pacing and emphasis; the manual override exists for good reason and is worth learning early
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Moderate, and heavier than a browser tool. This is desktop software: you download an installer, create an account, follow a guided onboarding and let it install a system-level virtual camera. macOS asks for several permissions, documented in a dedicated video; Windows users running Norton 360 must whitelist two executables in the firewall. Day-to-day use is genuinely simple — pick Nimagna Camera in your meeting app and present. The real work is upfront: verify that your hardware meets the stated requirements before installing, because that is where most disappointment comes from.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Nimagna free?
No. Nimagna is free to try for 30 days, and a discreet watermark sits in the top right corner of the output during the trial. After that you must move to a paid plan; there is no permanently free tier.
Which video conferencing tools does it work with?
Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Webex, Google Meet, Skype, Riverside, GoTo, BigMarker, Goldcast, Livestorm, Airmeet and most other video or streaming apps. Nimagna installs a virtual camera device, so you simply select "Nimagna Camera" in the camera settings of whichever tool you already use.
What computer do I need to run it?
Windows 10 or 11 64-bit with an Intel Core i5 and 8 GB of RAM as a minimum, with an i7, 16 GB and a GTX 1050 or better recommended; or macOS 12.3 and later, where Apple Silicon from M1 to M4 is recommended. Nimagna states plainly that on Intel Macs performance will be suboptimal. There is no mobile or web version.
Do I need a green screen or special equipment?
No. Nimagna states that no green screen, studio setup or technical skill is required, and that a laptop with a webcam is enough. Additional cameras, including a smartphone, are optional and unlock more elaborate multi-camera shows.
Does Nimagna handle my audio?
No. The virtual camera carries video only, so you select your microphone separately in your meeting or streaming tool. Nimagna suggests a conference speakerphone or a wireless microphone if you move away from your computer while presenting.
Can I record instead of going live?
Yes. A Record button starts capture after a three-second countdown and the finished file is written to your system's video folder, ready to publish or share. Codec, microphone and file location are all configurable in the recording settings.
Can I take control back from the automatic director?
Yes. A sparkle button, or the 0 key, pauses automatic direction — useful while you answer questions — and the number keys 1, 2 and 3 force a fixed framing on the content, on you alone, or on both together.
Where is my data hosted, and is it used to train AI models?
Neither question is answered on the site. The privacy policy only says data is processed at the company's operating offices and wherever the parties involved are located, naming no country or provider, and Nimagna never states whether customer material is used for model training. What is documented is that recordings stay on your machine and that the software sends anonymous usage telemetry to Nimagna.
Who is behind Nimagna and is there a minimum age?
Nimagna AG, registered in Zurich, Switzerland under number CHE-401.957.569 and founded in 2021 by two ETH Zurich computer scientists. The privacy policy states the service does not address anyone under 13, and the terms require users to be of legal age in their jurisdiction or to have a parent's consent.
Can I get a refund if I change my mind?
No. The terms of service state that fees paid are non-cancellable and non-refundable. If you cancel, the subscription simply runs until its expiry date without reimbursement, so it is worth using the 30-day trial thoroughly before committing to a plan.
Conclusion

Should you pick Nimagna?

Nimagna solves a narrow problem well, and knows it. The complaint it answers — that presenting online reduces you to a thumbnail while your slides take the screen — is real, and the answer is unusually practical: a virtual camera that slots into whatever conferencing tool you already use, with an automatic director doing the work a camera crew would otherwise do. Nothing has to change for your audience, and nothing has to be edited afterwards.

The company behind it is easy to check. Nimagna AG is registered in Zurich, publishes complete legal pages, names a data protection officer, and ships a product you can download, run and evaluate for thirty days before paying. Release notes, a detailed FAQ and a step-by-step guide all point to software that is actively maintained rather than merely announced.

The constraints are equally clear. This is desktop software with real hardware requirements, and the publisher openly warns that Intel Macs will underperform. There is no mobile version, no web version and no API. After the trial you pay, and the jump from the €12 Starter tier to the €59 Pro tier is where multi-camera work, gesture control and 1080p output actually live — worth checking against your needs before committing, especially as fees are non-refundable.

The gaps worth raising with the vendor concern data rather than features. Nimagna does not publish where data is hosted, offers no data processing agreement, lists no subprocessors, displays no security certification, and says nothing either way about whether customer material is used to train models. For an individual presenter that may not matter. For a regulated organisation rolling this out across a team, those are questions to settle before the first invoice.
