PaperChat
PaperChat is a no-code AI chatbot builder for customer support. Train it on your files, website, sitemap or plain text, publish it in one line of script, and take over any conversation live. Permanent free plan, no credit card.
What is PaperChat?
PaperChat is a SaaS platform for building AI customer-support chatbots, positioned as customer support AI agents for business with human handover. Everything is no-code: creating and publishing a bot takes no development skills.
The bot learns from sources you supply. PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT and HTML files up to 20 MB each, free text of at least 50 characters, a single page URL, a full site crawl, or a sitemap. Answers are then produced by retrieval over that content, with OpenAI providing the engine, so the assistant speaks from your documentation rather than from general knowledge.
Publishing happens through a script tag carrying your chatbot ID, dropped into the site's HTML. An Allowed Domains whitelist controls where the widget may load; anywhere else, it refuses. Beyond the website, PaperChat claims native messaging channels that it contrasts with Chatbase: WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram and Telegram, so one bot can serve several front doors.
Human handover is the feature the product leads with. An agent can step into any conversation in real time and take over from the assistant. Around it sit lead capture, a conversation history you can filter and export, multi-tenant workspaces, and Slack or Telegram notifications. The analytics view reports conversation volume, response time, frequent questions, resolution rate and leads captured. The widget itself is customizable: color, logo, bot name, welcome message, subtitle, availability hours.
Multilingual coverage is advertised inconsistently. The homepage says over 95 languages, the pricing page over 58 languages, and both figures currently sit on the site. Twelve free side tools, among them a reply generator, text-to-speech and name generators, are usable without an account and work as acquisition.
Pricing is published in full rather than hidden behind a sales call: a permanent free tier, then Basic at USD 35 per month, Pro at 99 and Enterprise at 399, plus a one-off lifetime deal at 699.
One caveat concerns the publisher rather than the product. No legal entity and no postal address appear anywhere; the footer reads "Made with love in the EU" alongside a 2026 PaperChat copyright. The domain was registered on 13 January 2025 with NameCheap, while the first Wayback capture dates back to 12 May 2024.

When to use PaperChat / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if PaperChat is the right fit.
When to use PaperChat
- Small businesses and startups that need answers around the clock without a dedicated support team
- Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, Webflow and Framer stores looking for a chat widget installed in one line
- Agencies and freelancers deploying bots for several clients from multi-tenant workspaces (3 to 5 chatbots on the upper tiers)
- Support teams that want repetitive questions deflected first and escalated to a human when needed
- Budget-conscious buyers: a genuine free plan and a paid entry point at USD 35 per month
When not to use PaperChat
- Developers who expect a published API reference: the REST API is only described inside a usage guide
- Enterprise procurement teams: no DPA, no subprocessor list and no hosting location are published
- Organizations that must guarantee their data never trains an AI model, since the privacy policy states the opposite
- Teams with large knowledge bases: the cap runs from 800 KB on the free plan to 25 MB (Basic), 40 MB (Pro) and 60 MB (Enterprise)
- Voice-driven projects and large support desks: the product is text-only and seats are limited to 1 to 5
How to use PaperChat
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Create an account, open the dashboard and click "+ New Chatbot"
- Give the bot a title and fill in the Allowed Domains: your live domain, plus the myshopify subdomain if you sell on Shopify
- Configure the basics: bot name, company name, widget subtitle, welcome message and color
- Open the Sources tab and feed the bot: upload files, paste text, or point it at a page URL or a sitemap; crawling and indexing run on their own
- Follow training progress in the Sources sidebar: number of files, pages crawled, total size and the quota left on your plan
- Go to the Embed tab and copy the script tag containing your chatbot ID
- Paste the tag into your site: theme.liquid for Shopify, header.php or the official plugin for WordPress, the Custom Code panel for Webflow, Wix and Framer
- Reload the page and check that the bubble appears in the bottom-right corner; when nothing shows, the two usual causes are a typo in the ID and a domain missing from the whitelist
- Hide the widget on selected pages with a Liquid condition if you only want it in part of the site
- Use the Messages tab to read, filter and export conversations, and to take over a live chat

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how PaperChat handles your data.
GDPR overview
The privacy policy contains an explicit "GDPR Compliance" section for users in the European Union. It names four legal bases, consent, contract, legitimate interest and legal obligation, and lists the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction and objection, and portability. A Data Protection Officer is reachable at support@paperchat.co for EU privacy inquiries. International transfers are said to rely on standard contractual clauses, adequacy decisions and other appropriate safeguards, and breaches are notified within 72 hours where the law requires it. California residents are offered CCPA rights as well. Two gaps stand out: no Article 27 representative is designated, and although the site presents itself as "proudly based in the European Union", section 10.10 of the terms places the agreement under the laws of the United States.
Who owns the data?
Under section 9.2 of the terms, customers keep all rights to the User Submissions they upload; PaperChat receives only a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable license to use, process and display that content for the sole purpose of providing the service, with no implied license beyond it. Section 9.1 puts the burden on the customer to hold the rights to whatever it sends. Section 9.3 reverses the ownership for Service Data: performance data belongs to PaperChat, which may use it freely provided it stays aggregated and anonymized and never identifies its source. Feedback is a third case, licensed to PaperChat perpetually, irrevocably and with the right to sublicense (section 8.4).
Reuse rights
The privacy policy says data serves to provide the service, answer support requests, personalize the experience and "train and improve our AI models (with appropriate safeguards)". The AI section adds that conversation data used for training is stripped of personally identifiable information and aggregated to prevent individual identification. Because the chatbot runs on OpenAI technology, messages may also be processed by OpenAI systems, and OpenAI may use them to improve its own services and models. No opt-out is documented. Marketing communications require consent, and third-party cookies from Google Analytics, social platforms and payment processors are disclosed. PaperChat claims it does not sell personal data and limits sharing to service providers, legal obligations and a possible business transfer. Nothing in the published documents grants customers rights over data they do not already own: section 9.1 requires them to hold the rights to everything they feed the chatbot.
Data retention & training
Hosting summary
PaperChat announces no hosting country and no hosting region anywhere on the site. The privacy policy addresses security rather than geography: encryption in transit and at rest, regular security assessments, access controls and backups. It also states that information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than the user's own, with standard contractual clauses, adequacy decisions and other appropriate safeguards presented as the protection. The only geographic signal available is a network measurement, and it deserves caution: the domain's IP address (216.150.1.1) geolocates to the United States on AS16509, Amazon.com. That address behaves as an anycast node, which makes it a CDN point of presence rather than proof of where data actually sits. Against that, the contact page declares the publisher "proudly based in the European Union". The net result is a stated European orientation, a network footprint pointing at the United States, and no committed hosting jurisdiction. Anyone with a data-residency requirement should ask the publisher before signing.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting PaperChat.
- No registered company name and no postal address are published, which makes recourse difficult if a dispute arises
- The terms declare United States law applicable while the site claims to be based in the European Union: an inconsistency to clear up before any controlled purchase
- Conversations may feed model training with no documented opt-out, so anything a customer types into the widget should be treated accordingly
- OpenAI processes the messages and may use them to improve its own models
- No DPA, no subprocessor list and no hosting country or region are published, which blocks the processing of EU end-customer personal data
- Fees are non-refundable under section 4.1, the terms are dated 1 January 2025 in version 1.0 with no revision since, and the advertised language count differs between two pages of the site
- An assistant that only answers from the content you upload will be confidently wrong wherever that content is stale, so keep sources fresh, review conversations and leave the human handover reachable
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Low. Setup is advertised as a matter of minutes and requires no code beyond a script tag pasted into your site, with step-by-step guides for Shopify, WordPress and WooCommerce, Webflow, Wix and Framer, plus an official WordPress plugin. The prerequisites are a published chatbot, its ID and edit access to your theme; no server skills and no OpenAI API key of your own are needed. One friction point is documented: the domain must appear in Allowed Domains, otherwise the widget silently refuses to load, which is the usual explanation when nothing shows up on the page.

Should you pick PaperChat?
PaperChat is a coherent, well-documented product. The feature set holds together, from multi-source training to a one-line widget, real-time human handover, native messaging channels and readable analytics, and the pricing is published in full: a genuine free tier, then USD 35, 99 and 399 per month, with a lifetime option at USD 699. For a small business or an agency that wants a support assistant answering on a Shopify or WordPress site within an afternoon, that combination is hard to argue with, and the entry price makes the tool a deliberate cheaper challenger to Chatbase, Intercom, Zendesk and Tidio.
Two reservations temper the picture. The first concerns the publisher rather than the software: no company beyond a trading name, no address, no legal entity of any kind, and legal documents that read like generic templates, including a governing-law clause pointing at the United States while the site describes itself as based in the European Union. The second is about data: conversation content may feed model training, anonymized but with no documented opt-out, and OpenAI processes the messages and may reuse them for its own models.
Neither reservation is disqualifying for a founder adding an FAQ bot to a landing page. Both become blocking for a purchase that has to clear a procurement desk expecting a DPA, a subprocessor list and a named hosting region, none of which PaperChat publishes. The short version: strong value for small structures, a poor fit for regulated buying. If you sit somewhere in between, the free plan is the cheapest way to find out which side you are on, and the compliance questions are worth settling with the publisher before customer conversations start flowing through it.
