What is Photomyne?
Photomyne is a suite of mobile scanning apps that replaces a flatbed scanner with the camera already in your pocket. Point the phone at an album page or a spread of loose prints, take a single shot, and AI finds each photo in the frame, crops it, straightens it and corrects the perspective, so a shoebox can be digitized in an afternoon rather than a weekend.
The suite runs to six apps: Photo Scan by Photomyne, the all-in-one flagship, plus SlideScan, FilmBox, Colorize, Photo Family Tree and FridgeArt. The terms describe AI features covering auto-cropping, auto-rotating, enhancing, coloring, animating, sharpening and automatically detecting the location and time a photo was taken; some of that runs on the device, while features such as animation and AI Couple Portrait are processed on third-party servers.
Restoration sits in the same place as capture. Colorize adds color to black-and-white originals, Sharpy pulls detail and resolution back into blurred faces, and filters handle the rest. Curation follows: albums, names attached to the people in each frame, place and date tags, written notes, voice recordings, and the handwriting on the back of a print scanned and kept linked to the front. The publisher is Photomyne Ltd., an Israeli company founded in 2014 and listed on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange since March 2021. Usage claims differ from page to page: the About page cites 40 million downloads, 425 million photos scanned and 175 countries, while the library program page reports 48 million downloads and a 4.7 rating from more than 130,000 reviews. Ancestry integrated the technology in March 2022, and a16z listed the app among its top generative AI apps in March 2024.
The model is freemium. The base tier is free and permanent but carries advertising and limits backup, sharing and multi-device access; a paid membership removes the ads, unlocks unlimited cloud backup and covers the whole suite. GDPR overview
Implementation is concrete rather than declarative. A dedicated GDPR page, also downloadable as a PDF, states that Photomyne is committed to and compliant with the EU GDPR and UK GDPR, and sets out step-by-step procedures for erasure, rectification, portability, withdrawal of consent, objection and access. Photomyne acts as controller and its DPO is reachable at support@photomyne.com with GDPR in the subject line. An Article 27 EU representative is appointed, DP-Dock GmbH in Hamburg, alongside a UK representative in London, both at photomyne@gdpr-rep.com; the Hamburg data protection authority is named as supervisory authority. Transfers outside the EEA rely on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses and on adequacy decisions. Two caveats: rights are exercised from inside the app rather than through a web form, and the GDPR page still shows 25 December 2022 as its last update while the terms and privacy policy were refreshed on 27 May 2026.
Who owns the data?
Photomyne's terms state that everything you submit, photos included, remains your property, and that you own the input you feed to its generative AI features. Ownership comes with a broad license, however: you grant Photomyne a worldwide, royalty-free, sublicensable and transferable right to use, copy, reproduce, publish, display, modify and create derivative works from your content in order to run the service and for related business purposes, and the sublicenses it grants are perpetual and irrevocable. Outside what the service requires, Photomyne undertakes not to use your content, with one exception: material you make public falls under a perpetual license covering editorial and advertising exploitation, without credit.
Reuse rights
You can reuse your own scans freely and without asking: export them to the camera roll or a computer, send them to Google Photos, or share them as files, collages or private web links. The license Photomyne grants you over the service itself is narrower, covering personal non-commercial use only. You remain fully responsible for any AI output you generate and must keep it within the law and the Acceptable GenAI Use Policy; Photomyne may embed watermarks or metadata in output, and you may not remove them. Output is not guaranteed to be unique, and using it to create, train, test or improve a third-party AI model, or reverse-engineering the technology, is prohibited. Apart from your own content, nothing on the service may be copied, modified, translated, published or sold. A Legacy Transfer feature lets you nominate a trusted person to take over the account in the future.

Personal data is stored on servers owned and hosted by AWS, Amazon's subsidiary, located in the United States and Europe, including Ireland; de-identified or aggregated data is processed on Google Cloud Platform, and backups sit on AWS archive servers. The privacy policy is explicit that the server holding your data may be outside your own country and that data may be transferred to service providers established in various countries. Transfers from the EEA to countries without an adequacy decision, the United States among them, are covered by the European Commission's standard contractual clauses, supplemented by adequacy decisions where they apply. The publisher is Israeli and the terms are governed by Israeli law, with exclusive jurisdiction given to the courts of Tel Aviv. The site itself resolves to 54.221.192.196, an Amazon address in Ashburn, United States.
