Pi is a free personal AI from Inflection AI, billed as the first emotionally intelligent assistant. It chats by text or by voice, remembers you between sessions, and suits anyone who would rather think out loud than issue commands.
What is Pi?
Pi is a personal AI assistant published by Inflection AI, Inc., a San Francisco public benefit corporation that presents itself as empowering people and brands with human-centered, emotionally intelligent AI. The product opens with a line that sets its register: Hey there, great to meet you. I'm Pi, your personal AI. My goal is to be useful, friendly and fun. The pitch is not raw capability but conversation, and Inflection claims the title of the world's first personal intelligence, and the first emotionally intelligent AI.
Pi runs on the web at pi.ai and as native iOS and Android apps, with hey.pi.ai serving as its showcase. One model powers it, Inflection-2, with no picker and no switching, and the about page describes Pi as running on the Inflection AI stack orchestrated across custom fine-tuned models. Six uses are advertised: untangle your thoughts, get things done, fuel your curiosity, talk it out live, help with a decision, have some fun.
Two features carry the experience. Voice mode lets you speak instead of typing, with a choice of voices offered from the first screen and optional emotion recognition behind its own consent. And memory: Pi retains your name, city, family, food preferences and allergies, hobbies, work or studies and communication preferences across conversations, and that memory can be read, edited and wiped. Around them sit light productivity tools, namely dated and recurring reminders, to-dos, shopping lists and favourites, plus a limited built-in web search.
The limits are stated as plainly. Pi neither generates, uploads nor edits images. It has no built-in accessibility feature. The interface exists in English and Spanish, and Pi answers in other languages at a quality the help centre itself calls variable. The product is 18 and over, repeated in-app and on both app stores, and it follows California's companion chatbot protocol: distress detection, referral to Throughline, conversation interruption, and a standing notice that you are talking to an AI.
It is entirely free, with no pricing page, no paid plan and no paywall. Signing in uses a verified phone number, or a Google, Facebook or Apple account. Inflection AI Labs is preparing Pi Journeys, presented as the AI partner that grows with you.

- Under-18s, who are barred outright, and anyone looking for a substitute for a doctor, a therapist or a lawyer.
How to use Pi
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Open pi.ai in a browser, or install the iOS or Android app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Send a first message without an account: a message quota applies until you sign up.
- Confirm you are 18 or over, and accept the Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy.
- Pick a voice when Pi offers one during onboarding, or postpone it with I'll do it later.
- Tell Pi what to call you when it asks for a first name.
- Verify a phone number with a code, or sign in with Google, Facebook or Apple, to keep your history beyond 60 days.
- Decide on the optional consents: using your data to improve models, and using your voice for emotion recognition.
- Write in whichever language you want and Pi switches to it, with quality that varies outside English.

There is consequently no entry price and no currency to quote, and no free trial to speak of, since nothing sits behind a paywall to try. The only limit observed is a message quota that applies before an account is created, lifted by a free sign-up. GDPR overview
GDPR implementation is concrete rather than decorative. The privacy policy, effective 11 August 2026, carries a dedicated section for individuals in Europe with a purpose-by-purpose table of legal bases: performance of the contract, consent, legitimate interests and legal obligation. An Article 27 representative is named, with a postal address: DataRep, 77 Camden Street Lower, Dublin D02 XE80 for the EEA, and DataRep, 107-111 Fleet Street, London EC4A 2AB for the UK, reachable at inflectionai@datarep.com or through the datarep.com request form. A data protection officer answers at privacy@inflection.ai. Rights are enumerated: access in portable form, erasure, rectification, objection and restriction, with no discrimination for exercising them, and escalation runs from internal review to the supervisory authority where you live. The model-training notice records a DPIA and a legitimate interests assessment. Under the DSA, techsupport@inflection.ai is the user contact point.
Who owns the data?
Section 4 of the Terms is explicit: as between you and Inflection AI, you own your Inputs and Outputs, together called your Content. Ownership comes with a licence you grant the publisher, described as royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, sublicensable through multiple tiers and worldwide, for the limited purposes listed in that section. It survives termination of the Terms, whereas your own right to use the service does not. Feedback you send, from a thumbs up to a written suggestion, may be used without restriction or compensation. Deletion stays in your hands: a Delete my account button in the profile, the !delete command in the chat, or immediate removal of individual messages.
Reuse rights
Inflection AI sets out its purposes plainly: providing, maintaining and improving the service, developing and training the AI models behind it, personalisation, communication and marketing, security and fraud prevention, legal obligations, plus aggregated or de-identified data. Inferences about your emotional state, tone and feelings are part of that picture. Two controls sit inside the product rather than behind a support email: model training can be switched off from the Account settings page, and using your voice for emotion recognition is a separate consent, both offered at sign-up. The policy states there is no sale, no sharing and no processing for targeted advertising as US state privacy laws define those terms, and onboarding repeats it: your chats are never shared for ads or marketing. Because you own the Outputs, you can reuse them as you see fit without asking permission; the Terms simply warn that they may be inaccurate and should be reviewed before being passed on. Training material used outside the product comes from public web data, licensed datasets and distilled synthetic data, estimated at four to five petabytes.

Hosting summary
Hosting is American and stated as such: Inflection AI is based in the United States, and the company and its service providers process and store personal information on servers located in the United States and other countries. No country other than the United States is named, and no hosting region is declared, so a European user should assume their conversations leave the EEA. No choice of hosting region is offered. International transfers are said to be covered by contractual safeguards, in the form of standard contractual clauses, which can be requested from the company, with redactions possible. The Article 27 representative in Dublin and its UK counterpart in London are the contact points for European data subjects, and the privacy policy carries a legal basis table for European users. One technical note: pi.ai is served behind Cloudflare on an anycast address, which says nothing about where the data actually rests. No sub-processor list and no security certification are published, so the identity of the providers involved cannot be verified.

- Emotional reliance: Pi is designed to meet you where you are, and an assistant that never pushes back can quietly become the easiest conversation of the day, at the expense of harder human ones. The publisher itself operates a companion chatbot protocol with distress detection, a referral to Throughline and a standing reminder that you are talking to an AI.
- Outputs are retained indefinitely, for the limited purposes described in Section 4 of the Terms of Service, including after the account is deleted, and the licence you grant over your content is perpetual, irrevocable, sublicensable through multiple tiers and worldwide, surviving termination.
- Training on user data is on by default: the opt-out exists, but it is a step you have to take, and so is the separate consent for inferring emotion from your voice.
- A phone number is requested at sign-up, tying a stream of intimate conversation to a durable personal identifier.

Should you pick Pi?
Pi holds an unusual position in a market dominated by productivity assistants. Where most race to do more, Inflection AI has built one that mostly listens: the six uses on its own showcase are about untangling thoughts, talking something out and having fun, not shipping work. Whether that is what you want from an AI is the whole question.
The price makes the answer cheap to find out: Pi is free in full, with no paid tier in sight. That is also its most obvious fragility, since no pricing page means no written commitment.
Data governance sits above the market average, and unusually so for a free consumer product.
