Overview

What is Prisma AI?

Prisma AI is a mobile photo editor built by Prisma Labs, Inc., a Sunnyvale company that has been working on AI-driven creative tools since 2016. Its core idea is neural style transfer: you give the app a photo, choose an artistic style inspired by well-known painters, and the algorithm repaints the picture in seconds. The terms of use describe it plainly as software that uses artificial intelligence to turn photos into works of art, change the background or foreground, overlay objects and clone the style of other images.

The library holds more than 500 styles and effects, with a new filter published every day and a dedicated set of Portrait styles for selfies. Portrait Segmentation applies a style to the subject or to the background separately, and a background tool swaps the backdrop for a template or any picture from your gallery. Conventional retouching is there too: exposure, sharpness, contrast, brightness, blur, skin editing and decorative frames. A Prisma Premium subscription unlocks every style without exception and saves images in HD.

What sets the app apart from most consumer editors is the Processing section of its settings, which gives genuine control over where the work happens. You can switch to offline, on-device processing — slower, with some styles and HD output unavailable — or keep online processing, in which case photos reach the company's servers. A separate toggle, off by default, decides whether your pictures help improve Prisma's styles, and another decides whether originals are kept on the server for later editing.

Prisma is mobile-only. There is no web version, no desktop client and no API. It runs on iOS 15 and later, including iPad, Apple Silicon Macs and Apple Vision, and on Android, where Google Play flags the app as containing ads. The interface ships in English, French, Russian and Simplified Chinese, and sign-in uses an e-mail address, an Apple ID or a Google account.

The track record is substantial: App of the Year on both the App Store and Google Play in 2016, number one by downloads in 125 countries, a claimed 120 million users, 4.7 out of 5 from 212,000 App Store ratings and 4.6 out of 5 from more than a million Play reviews. Prisma Labs also publishes Lensa AI, its sister app.

What it does

  • Apply any of more than 500 styles and effects, including a new filter released daily
  • Style the subject and the background separately with Portrait Segmentation
  • Replace the background of a selfie with a template or an image from the gallery
  • Retouch exposure, sharpness, contrast, brightness, blur and skin
  • Export in HD and share straight to social networks

Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Prisma AI handles your data.

GDPR overview

Implementation is concrete rather than declarative. Section 8 of the privacy policy sets out EEA and UK rights under the GDPR and the UK GDPR — access, rectification, restriction, erasure, portability, objection, withdrawal of consent and complaint to a supervisory authority, with links to the EDPB list and to the ICO — and promises an answer within one month, extendable by two. Legal bases are given purpose by purpose. Transfers out of the EEA rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses under Article 46(2)(c), and UK transfers on the UK Addendum or the IDTA. An EEA/UK representative and a data protection officer are both designated, reachable at dpo@prisma-ai.com. The minimum age rises to 16 in the EEA and the UK. No external certification and no data processing agreement are published.

Who owns the data?

Section 5 of the terms is unusually clear: you retain all rights in and to the photos you upload and the images you create. Prisma Labs takes only a Company License — non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, fully paid, transferable and sub-licensable — to use, cache, reproduce, modify, distribute, create derivative works from and display that content, and only to operate or improve Prisma. Sharing is limited to service providers and group affiliates, and the company states it neither sells your content nor passes it to unrelated third parties. The licence is time-limited: it ends automatically when you delete the content or close your account. Everything else in the app — styles, filters, branding — belongs to Prisma Labs.

Reuse rights

What you produce is yours to reuse. You may share edited photos on social networks, keep them for personal use, and even sell them: the ban on commercial use covers the app and Prisma's own assets, and explicitly excludes selling your own content. The company's material works the other way round. The User License on the app and on Prisma Content is limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, revocable and strictly personal, so you may not resell or commercially exploit the app or its styles, reproduce or publicly display Prisma Content, build derivative works from it, or scrape data from the service without written consent. Feedback you send is treated as non-confidential and may be reused, edited and published by Prisma Labs.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
By default, photos you upload are deleted automatically within 24 hours. Turning on the toggle that lets Prisma use your pictures to improve its styles keeps them on the servers instead, and a separate option stores your originals for later editing; with that option off, only edited versions are kept. Other personal data is retained until you delete your Prisma account, and deletion is normally completed within four hours of the request, which you can make in the app on iOS and Android or by writing to privacy@prisma-ai.com. Prisma Labs may keep data longer where the law, a dispute, an investigation or the enforcement of its agreements requires it, and it may continue to use anonymised data that can no longer identify you.

Hosting summary

Prisma runs on Amazon Web Services servers located in the United States. Analytics is processed both on AWS in the United States and by Google LLC in the Republic of Ireland, with Google Cloud Platform named as the host for analytics data. Photos only reach those servers if online processing stays on or if you consent to improving Prisma's styles; offline processing keeps the image on the device. Prisma Labs and several of its providers are incorporated in the United States, so personal data may be transferred there and stored. Where EEA law requires it and no adequacy decision applies, transfers rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, and UK transfers on the UK Addendum or the International Data Transfer Agreement. Two group affiliates based in Cyprus, Palta People Ltd and Palta Software Ltd, act as processors for internal processing and analytics. No hosting certification is published, and users cannot choose a storage region.

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Prisma AI.

  • Faces are sensitive data: with online processing left on, portraits are uploaded to third-party servers rather than staying on your phone
  • The style improvement toggle is opt-in, but switching it on hands your photos to model improvement, and few users read that far
  • Keeping originals on the server is an option that quietly extends retention for as long as the account exists
  • The licence granted to the publisher is sub-licensable and transferable, and the privacy policy allows data to move on in a merger, acquisition, bankruptcy or liquidation
  • Advertising identifiers (IDFA, Android Advertising ID) feed interest-based advertising, and the Android app carries ads
  • Systematic beautification of selfies can distort how you see your own face, and the effect builds quietly over time
  • You alone are responsible for the consent of anyone appearing in a photo you upload, and you agree to indemnify the publisher if a claim follows
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Very low. Install the app from the App Store or Google Play, grant access to the camera or photo library, and start editing; an account is only needed for some features and can be created with an e-mail address, an Apple ID or a Google account. Nothing has to be configured, and there is no API key and no server setup. The one screen worth reading is Settings, Processing section, which decides whether images are handled online or on the device, whether they help improve Prisma's styles, and whether originals are kept. iOS 15 or later is required.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does Prisma AI actually do?
It repaints your photos. Neural style transfer turns an ordinary picture into something that looks hand-painted, using styles inspired by famous artists. The app also replaces backgrounds, styles the subject and the backdrop separately, and offers standard retouching tools for exposure, sharpness, contrast, brightness, blur and skin.
Is Prisma AI free?
The app is free to download and keeps a free tier of styles, with advertising on Android. A Prisma Premium subscription unlocks every style and HD export, starting at $7.99 per month after a three-day free trial. Prices come from the app stores, since the website publishes no pricing page.
Is there a web version or an API?
No. Prisma runs only as a mobile app, on iOS 15 or later — including iPad, Apple Silicon Macs and Apple Vision — and on Android. There is no browser version, no desktop client and no public API or developer documentation.
Are my photos used to train the AI?
Only if you switch on the toggle that lets Prisma use your pictures to improve its styles, and that toggle is off by default. The terms of use add that photos are not used to generally train Prisma Labs' separate artificial intelligence products.
How long are my photos kept?
Uploaded photos are deleted automatically within 24 hours by default. They stay on the servers if you enable style improvement, and a separate option lets you keep your originals stored for later editing. Other personal data is retained until you delete your account.
Can I edit without sending my photos to a server?
Yes. The Processing section of the settings lets you turn off online processing so images are handled on the device. The trade-off is stated on the site: slower processing, and some styles as well as HD output become unavailable.
Where is my data hosted?
On Amazon Web Services servers in the United States for the app itself. Analytics is processed both on AWS in the United States and by Google LLC in the Republic of Ireland. Transfers out of the EEA rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
Who owns the images I create?
You do. The terms confirm that you retain all rights to your content; Prisma Labs holds only a licence limited to operating and improving the service, and that licence ends automatically when you delete the content or your account.
What is the minimum age?
Thirteen in general, sixteen for users in the EEA and the United Kingdom. Purchasing a subscription requires you to be over 18, or of the age of legal majority where you live.
How do I delete my account or cancel my subscription?
You can delete your account inside the app on both iOS and Android, or write to privacy@prisma-ai.com; deletion is normally completed within four hours. Subscriptions are cancelled and refunded through Apple or Google; for a subscription bought on the web, write to contact@prisma-ai.com.
Conclusion

Should you pick Prisma AI?

Prisma AI has been around since 2016, won App of the Year on both stores in its first year, and is still shipping updates a decade later. That longevity says something: on the narrow ground it occupies — turning an ordinary photo into something that looks painted, in seconds, with no skill required — it delivers, and the ratings from more than a million reviewers back it up.

What deserves more attention than the filters is the privacy design. Uploaded photos are deleted within 24 hours by default, the toggle that feeds your pictures into style improvement is off until you switch it on, on-device processing is a real option, and the privacy policy names its subprocessors down to the Cypriot affiliates. Consumer apps rarely go that far, and it is the strongest argument for trusting Prisma with faces.

The limits are just as clear. This is a phone app and nothing else: no browser version, no desktop, no API, no way to fit it into a production workflow. Pricing is the weakest point — nothing on the website, and an App Store list where ten subscription SKUs coexist at prices from $1.99 a week to $39.99 a year for offers that differ only in duration. Android users get advertising, and the terms impose individual arbitration with a class action waiver unless you opt out in writing within thirty days.

Treat it for what it is: a fast, enjoyable creative toy that occasionally produces something worth publishing, aimed at people making images for themselves or for social feeds. Designers, art teachers and content creators will get real value from it. Anyone shopping for a professional or enterprise editing tool should look elsewhere — Prisma Labs has never claimed to be building one.
