Puzzle
Puzzle is AI-native accounting software built on a general ledger rebuilt from scratch. AI agents draft categorization, reconciliation and close for startups, small businesses and accounting firms, and nothing posts without human approval. Books stay current between closes.
What is Puzzle?
Puzzle is an AI-native accounting platform published by Puzzle Financial Inc., registered in Wilmington, Delaware. Its promise, Accurate Books. At AI Speed., rests on one architectural claim: the general ledger was rebuilt from scratch rather than grafted onto an existing system. That is the core argument against QuickBooks and Xero, whose APIs Puzzle presents as too limiting for genuine automation, and the reason it positions itself as a replacement rather than a layer on top.
The product serves two audiences. Companies, meaning startups and small businesses, get books that stay current between closes. Accounting firms get a way to carry more clients per bookkeeper. Puzzle claims 7,000+ firms and startups on the platform and USD 50 billion in transactions processed.
Mechanically, AI agents draft the work: categorization, reconciliation and close, all presented for review. Puzzle calls this Governed Automation, meaning AI prepares the work while accountants keep control of the outcome, with every automated action traceable, reviewable and editable before financial statements are finalized. Nothing posts without approval. The agents are described as deterministic, same inputs and same outputs on every run, which is the stated reason they are granted write access while third-party models such as Claude and ChatGPT only get read-only access through Puzzle's MCP server.
The AI suite has three layers. Chat answers one-off questions against the ledger. Cowork turns a Chat task into a scheduled agent replayed every month across every client. Close runs month-end as a team workflow, with assigned tasks, deadlines and an audit trail. AI Close, presented as the first agent builder built directly into the general ledger and aimed at firms, follows a Describe, Lock, Approve, Review and Finalize cycle.
Concretely, Puzzle produces income statements, balance sheets and cash activity statements, cash, burn and runway figures, revenue recognition, and cash and accrual books maintained simultaneously from the same ledger. Native integrations with Stripe, Brex, Mercury, Ramp, Gusto, Rippling and Deel, plus Plaid for 400+ banks, replace manual imports. Claimed results: up to 98% auto-categorization, closes up to 50% faster, 85-95% of repetitive work automated. Inventory-heavy businesses stay outside the optimized scope.
What it does

- Query the general ledger in natural language from Claude or ChatGPT through the MCP server
When to use Puzzle / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if Puzzle is the right fit.
When to use Puzzle
- Venture-backed startups running a modern fintech stack (Stripe, Ramp, Brex, Mercury), who get native connections instead of CSV imports.
- Accounting firms that want to move from roughly 10 to 30 clients per bookkeeper without adding headcount.
- Founders with no finance background: Puzzle presents itself as straightforward and intuitive to use even without an accounting background.
- High-growth companies with heavy transaction volume, where reviewing by exception beats checking every line.
- Finance teams that need cash, burn and runway updated daily rather than three weeks after month-end.
When not to use Puzzle
- Companies carrying inventory: Puzzle states that inventory businesses may have accounting needs it is not yet optimized to support.
- Anyone based outside the United States: the terms of service reserve use to residents of the US and its territories, and hosting is US-only.
- Teams hoping to replace their accountant outright: Puzzle automates 85-95% of the repetitive work and still expects a human to review and decide.
- Buyers looking for tax filing, payment processing, financial modeling or FP&A, none of which Puzzle does (it partners with Runway and Causal for planning).
- Businesses not yet incorporated, for which Puzzle recommends completing incorporation before opening books.
How to use Puzzle
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Start the 14-day free trial, which opens full access to the Complete plan and keeps your data when you convert.
- Follow the guided onboarding and connect banks, cards, payroll and billing tools in one click; setup is advertised at around 15 minutes.
- Optionally import your history automatically from QuickBooks, self-guided on Core or assisted from Complete upwards.
- Map accounts and categories once and confirm opening balances, then start the books for the current period.
- Let the agents categorize from day one, up to 98% with no rules to write, and read the drafts they produce.
- Validate transactions with the green check to move them from draft to final, then complete reconciliations account by account.
- Invite your accountant, or pick one from Puzzle's partner network: profile, then User management, Add user, Bookkeeper permissions, Invite.
- On the Complete plan, review and categorize straight from your inbox instead of opening the app.
- In AI Close, describe the workflow in plain language, let the AI convert it into explicit steps that lock, approve them, then let the agent run with a full audit trail before the Review & Finalize analysis.
- For developer use, request API access at api@puzzle.io, or connect Claude or ChatGPT read-only through the MCP server.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- A general ledger rebuilt for AI rather than bolted onto a legacy platform, which is the whole point of the product
- Human sign-off is mandatory: nothing posts without approval, and every automated action is traceable, reviewable and editable before statements are finalized
- Deterministic agents, same inputs and same outputs on every run, which is why they get write access while external models stay read-only
- Cash and accrual books maintained simultaneously from a single ledger, which few tools in this segment offer
- Native connections to the modern fintech stack (Stripe, Ramp, Brex, Mercury, Gusto, Rippling, Deel, plus 400+ banks through Plaid), with no CSV imports
- Real-time cash, burn and runway rather than figures that arrive three weeks after month-end
- Commercial safety nets: 14-day full-access trial, free QuickBooks migration, unlimited users on Complete and Scale, and a refund if the close is not 50% faster within 60 days (strict conditions apply)
Cons
- No mention of the GDPR, no DPA and no sub-processor list anywhere on the site, which leaves a European buyer without a compliance file
- The terms of service reserve use to residents of the United States and its territories, and data is hosted exclusively on US servers
- Complete silence on whether customer data is used to train models, and no opt-out documented in either direction
- AI credits are capped, at 25 lifetime credits on Starter and Core, 100 per month on Complete and 300 on Scale, and AI Close is a paid add-on on every plan
- Scope limits: inventory businesses are explicitly outside the optimized perimeter, there is no tax filing, no payment processing, no financial modeling, and no iOS or Android app
- API access is limited to the higher plans and granted on request at api@puzzle.io, while the MCP server is still alpha, rate-limited and needs re-authentication every 5 days
- SOC 2 is claimed without a type, an audit date or an accessible report, and the older /legal/faq page still describes Puzzle as free, contradicting the current pricing grid
Pricing & Plans
Puzzle is a paid subscription product. The current pricing page lists four plans and no permanently free tier: Starter at USD 25 per month on annual billing (USD 30 month-to-month), Core at USD 60 (USD 72), Complete at USD 100 (USD 120) and Scale at USD 300 (USD 360). Annual commitment is displayed as 20% cheaper than monthly. The entry price point is therefore USD 25 per month with an annual commitment. A 14-day free trial gives full access to the Complete plan and can be cancelled at any time, and introductory promotions are shown: 100% off for two months on Starter, 50% off for three months on Core, Complete and Scale. AI Close is sold as an add-on on all four plans, and accounting firms are quoted individually. Puzzle also undertakes to refund subscription fees if the close is not at least 50% faster within the first 60 days, under strict conditions. One documentary caveat: the older /legal/faq page still states that Puzzle is free, which contradicts the current pricing grid.

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Puzzle handles your data.
GDPR overview
There is no mention of the GDPR anywhere on Puzzle's site. A full-text search across every page collected, privacy policy and terms of service included, returns zero occurrences of GDPR, General Data Protection Regulation, data processing agreement or sub-processor. The privacy policy is written for a US audience only: California-specific rights, children under 13, no legal bases and no EU data subject rights. No Article 27 representative is designated. The terms reserve use to residents of the United States and its territories, apply California law and route disputes to JAMS arbitration in San Francisco; data sits on US servers. Some rights nevertheless exist contractually: users may request access to, amendment of or deletion of their personal information at privacy@puzzle.io, and cookie tracking can be refused through the site banner. A European controller will simply not find the documentation it normally requires.
Who owns the data?
Puzzle's security page states plainly that the customer owns the data, and that the company commits to letting the customer control who can access what and when. Data can be exported at any time from the dashboard, the reports page or the developer API, and deleted at any time on the customer's own initiative. Conversely, records can be kept in the system in perpetuity if the customer prefers. Asked about surprise lock-ins, Puzzle answers no. The company also states that it does not share or sell customer information with third parties. Beyond these statements, no separate ownership or license clause is published on the site.
Reuse rights
Under the privacy policy in effect since 19 December 2025, Puzzle Financial Inc. uses personal information to operate the site, to build anonymized and aggregated datasets for internal research and analysis, to communicate with users, to manage partnerships and integrations, to detect illegal activity, and to improve content and measure audience. Sharing is described as limited: trusted partners identified by company name or domain for joint analytics, service providers acting on Puzzle's behalf, an acquirer in a business transfer, and legal obligations. Puzzle states it has never sold and will never sell user data, and that SMS opt-in details are neither shared nor sold to third parties for marketing. Financial integrations are read-only, with Puzzle stating that it does not, will not and cannot change your data, and that no credentials or passwords for connected services are stored. Cookies are limited to strictly necessary and performance categories plus web beacons, and Do Not Track signals are not honored. On the customer side, the ledgers, statements and exports produced in Puzzle are the customer's own accounting records, reusable without asking permission and retrievable at any time through the dashboard, the reports page or the API. Nothing in the published documents addresses whether customer data is used to train AI models.

Hosting summary
Puzzle states that it uses multiple layers of security and policies to safeguard the collection, use and disclosure of information on its US servers. No cloud provider, region or datacenter is named. Encryption is described as 256-bit AES, presented as comparable to the standards of large financial institutions, applied in transit and at rest, alongside role-based access and a full trail of actions and approvals. Financial integrations are read-only and no credentials or passwords for the connected services are stored. SOC 2 is claimed in the homepage FAQ, but without a type, an audit date or a published report. No sub-processor is named: the security page refers only to best-in-class security and data partners. On the infrastructure side, the site resolves to 199.36.158.100, an anycast address served by Fastly and located in the United States. The jurisdiction is American throughout: US servers, California law and JAMS arbitration in San Francisco. There is no European hosting option, no regional choice and no documented transfer mechanism.

Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Puzzle.
- Rubber-stamping risk: agents draft categorizations, reconciliations and entries, and approval comes down to a green check. Review by exception saves hours, but it can quietly become approval without review, and Puzzle itself insists the accountant keeps the judgment.
- Legal exposure outside the US: the terms reserve use to residents of the United States and its territories, and state that anyone accessing the site from elsewhere does so at their own initiative and is responsible for local law compliance.
- No GDPR, DPA or sub-processor documentation, with data hosted on US servers only: a European controller will not find what its own compliance file requires.
- No published position on AI training: nothing on the site says whether customer ledgers feed model training, and no opt-out is documented.
- Security claims that cannot be verified from outside: SOC 2 is asserted without a type, an audit date or an accessible report, and no security partner is named.
- Contractual fine print: the 50% faster close guarantee requires onboarding within 7 days, live API integrations and a single entity, and excludes CSV and PDF uploads. AI credits are capped, AI Close is a paid add-on, and the MCP server is alpha with re-authentication every 5 days.
- Company footprint worth checking: the published address is a PMB mailbox in Wilmington, Delaware, not an operating office, and the domain was registered in 2014 and first captured in 2015, well before Puzzle's activity, so it was visibly bought second-hand.
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Low for a non-technical user. Puzzle advertises a 15-minute setup: guided onboarding, one-click integration connections, a one-off mapping of accounts and categories, opening balances to confirm, and an optional automatic import from QuickBooks. It claims to be intuitive for founders without a finance background, and productive from day one. Two caveats: the faster-close guarantee requires onboarding and a setup call within 7 days, and developer use adds a step, since API access is granted on request at api@puzzle.io. Cited references: a back office configured in 15 minutes, and an implementation cut from 6 hours to 1.5.

Should you pick Puzzle?
Puzzle is one of the more credible attempts to rebuild accounting around AI rather than decorate it with a chatbot. The functional and commercial documentation is unusually complete: four public price points, a detailed comparison table, a 14-day full-access trial, a free QuickBooks migration and a refund if the close is not 50% faster within 60 days. The differentiation is technical and real, with a ledger rebuilt from scratch, deterministic agents, mandatory human approval and an audit trail on every automated action. Traction is claimed at 7,000+ firms and startups, USD 50 billion in transactions processed and USD 50 million raised. Against QuickBooks, on the US startup and small-business segment, the value for money is competitive.
Two reservations matter, and both concern documentation rather than features. First, for a European reader the file is empty: no mention of the GDPR anywhere, no DPA, no sub-processor list, no Article 27 representative, hosting on US servers only, and terms that reserve use to residents of the United States and its territories. That is silence rather than non-compliance, but a European controller cannot build a compliance file on silence. Second, Puzzle publishes no position at all on whether customer ledgers feed model training, and documents no opt-out. It does commit, clearly and repeatedly, never to sell user data.
In practice: if you are a US-incorporated startup, small business or accounting firm on a modern fintech stack and without inventory, Puzzle deserves a serious trial. Before committing, check the AI credit allowance on your plan, 25 lifetime credits on Starter and Core, the price of the AI Close add-on, and the strict conditions attached to the faster-close guarantee. Ask directly about the SOC 2 type and audit date, and about model training. If you operate from Europe, ask those questions first.
