Retro Diffusion
Retro Diffusion is an AI generator for real grid-aligned, palette-controlled pixel art: sprites, characters, animations and tilesets for game makers. It runs as a web app, an API and an MCP server, billed per generation from a prepaid balance.
What is Retro Diffusion?
Retro Diffusion is an AI image generator built for one thing: real pixel art. Where general-purpose models turn out pixel-ish images on an irregular grid, Retro Diffusion aligns its output to the pixel grid, holds it to a controlled palette, and delivers transparent backgrounds, animation frames and sprite sheets ready to drop into a game. It is published by Astropulse LLC and has been online since at least October 2023. Three models sit behind the app. RD Fast is the quick, cheap one, with results in seconds, batches of up to sixteen variations and a price from around $0.015 an image. RD Plus opens the widest style library, from watercolor and cartoon to isometric, top-down maps and Minecraft assets, from around $0.03. RD Pro is the quality tier: the most detailed prompt following, and up to nine reference images to lock a look. A fourth group, Retro Diffusion Animations, generates clips from about $0.07. The public catalog lists 83 or more styles, covering characters, isometric and top-down views, platformer sets, 1-bit, Minecraft objects and textures, UI elements, item sheets and character turnarounds. Sizes run from 16x16 to 512x512 depending on the model, with lossless nearest-neighbor upscaling on download. Animation covers walk cycles, combat sprites, VFX and 8-direction turnarounds, built from a prompt or from a still image you already have, exported as a GIF or a sprite sheet. Eight browser tools handle the rest: Background Remover, Color Reducer, Color Style Transfer, Image Edit, Inpainting, K-Centroid Downscale, Outpainting and Palette Converter. The free Pixel Art Fixer, which needs no account, finds the implied grid in a pixel-ish image, snaps every cell back into place and restores clean edges. Custom styles train from a few reference images, with no queue and no surcharge, and tilesets export straight to SpriteFusion. Developers get a single HTTP API, free cost estimation before spending, asynchronous jobs for batch pipelines, Python and Node.js samples on GitHub, and a hosted MCP server for assistants such as Claude and Cursor. The models are also served through Replicate and Poe. Billing is a prepaid balance spent per generation: no subscription, credits that never expire, failed generations refunded automatically.
What it does
- Generate grid-aligned pixel art with a controlled palette and a transparent background
- Produce sprite sheets and animation frames: walk, idle, jump, attack or a freely described action

- Drive all of it from an HTTP API or from an MCP-compatible AI assistant
When to use Retro Diffusion / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if Retro Diffusion is the right fit.
When to use Retro Diffusion
- Indie game developers and small studios that need a steady supply of consistent sprites, characters and game-ready props
- Pixel artists who want to iterate cheaply before finishing by hand, with RD Fast turning out batches of up to sixteen variations from around $0.015 an image
- Art directors and teams that have to match an existing art direction, through custom styles trained from a few reference images or up to nine references fed straight to RD Pro
- Animators and level designers producing walk cycles, idle and attack sprites, 8-direction turnarounds and complete wang tilesets with SpriteFusion export
- Developers automating asset production through a single HTTP endpoint, asynchronous batch jobs or the hosted MCP server, with commercial rights granted on everything generated
When not to use Retro Diffusion
- Regulated industries: the terms explicitly exclude HIPAA, FISMA and GLBA compliance
- European buyers working from a procurement checklist, since the site carries no GDPR mention, no data processing agreement, no subprocessor list and no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certification, and hosts everything in the United States
- Anyone after high-resolution or photorealistic output: the models run from 16x16 to 512x512 (384x384 for scenes, per the home-page FAQ) and produce nothing but pixel art
- Mobile-first users and anyone under 13: there is no iOS or Android app, only the browser, and the terms set a minimum age of 13
- Buyers who expect refundable purchases or a courtroom, as credit purchases are non-refundable and disputes go to mandatory RapidRuling arbitration under New Hampshire law, with class actions waived
How to use Retro Diffusion
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Create an account from 'Get Started For Free': 50 credits are granted and no card is required
- Open the web app, where every model and tool is available from the start
- Pick a style from the public catalog, where clicking one opens the generator already configured, or pick a model: RD Fast, RD Plus, RD Pro or Animations
- Write your prompt, and optionally add reference images, up to nine with RD Pro, or a starting image
- Check the exact price, which is shown before you confirm, and use the free cost estimate if you are unsure
- Refine in the same editor with inpainting, outpainting, background removal, palette conversion or seamless tiling
- To animate, upload a still image and choose an action such as walk, idle, jump or attack, or describe your own
- For the API, sign in, open the API tab in the navigation bar, create and manage your keys, then POST to https://api.retrodiffusion.ai/v1/inferences with the X-RD-Token header
- For an AI assistant, connect the hosted MCP server at https://mcp.retrodiffusion.ai/mcp
- Top up credits when the balance runs low, using the automatic recharge option in your account if you prefer
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Genuine specialization: grid-aligned output, controlled palettes and transparent backgrounds, which is exactly what separates it from general-purpose generators
- Very low per-image pricing shown before you spend, from around $0.015 an image, with free cost estimates and failed generations refunded automatically
- No subscription at all: credits are bought up front and never expire
- 50 free credits on sign-up with no card required, and the Pixel Art Fixer usable without even creating an account
- Commercial use is granted and you keep full rights to everything you generate
- Broad coverage in one place: generation, animation, tilesets, UI assets, eight editing tools and custom styles
- Developer-ready, with a documented API, Python and Node.js samples, a hosted MCP server, and the models also available through Replicate and Poe
Cons
- No public pricing page: /pricing does not exist and the credit packs are only visible once you are signed in
- No mention of the GDPR, no data processing agreement, no subprocessor list and no security certification anywhere on the site
- Nothing at all is said about model training on customer content, neither a commitment nor an opt-out
- No postal address is published for the company, on the site or in the legal documents, and the contact email sits on a different domain, retrodiffusion.com rather than retrodiffusion.ai
- Hosting is United States only with the transfer imposed, purchases are non-refundable, and disputes go to mandatory RapidRuling arbitration with class actions waived
- The site is entirely JavaScript-rendered, so /learn-more, /terms, /privacy and /app return an empty page to crawlers, and the terms and privacy policy exist only as embedded PDFs
- A modest resolution ceiling of 512x512, or 384x384 for some scenes, no mobile app, a single generic support email plus a Discord server, and a very small structure: one LLC around a single founder with no known funding
Pricing & Plans
Retro Diffusion operates no subscription plans, and therefore no free tier in the usual sense; it is billed per generation from a prepaid credit balance. Every new account is granted 50 free credits with no card required, and the Pixel Art Fixer remains usable without an account. The lowest paid entry point is a credit pack at USD 5.00, described in the public FAQ as credit packages starting at just $5; the in-app packs run USD 5 for 375 credits, USD 10 for 800, USD 25 for 2,250 and USD 50 for 5,500, with a custom amount from USD 50 to USD 10,000 priced at 110 credits per dollar. Generation itself starts at approximately USD 0.015 per image with RD Fast, USD 0.03 with RD Plus and USD 0.07 per animated clip. The exact price is displayed before each generation, cost estimates are free, failed generations are credited back automatically, and credits do not expire. Payment is accepted in US dollars only, by PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover, and purchases are non-refundable. Teams and businesses may arrange usage-based monthly billing on request. No public pricing page exists, as credit purchase sits behind authentication.

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Retro Diffusion handles your data.
GDPR overview
The GDPR is never mentioned. Neither 'GDPR' nor 'General Data Protection Regulation' appears anywhere on the site or in its legal PDFs, and there is no Article 27 EU representative, no data protection officer and no named legal basis for processing. The privacy policy, effective 19 August 2025, frames rights generically, 'Depending on your jurisdiction': access to and correction of your account, account deletion, opting out of promotional messages, and restricting or objecting to certain processing, with requests going to support@retrodiffusion.com. Section 6 states that the services are hosted in the United States, that information is transferred to and processed there, and that using the services counts as consent to that transfer; no transfer mechanism is cited, neither standard contractual clauses nor the Data Privacy Framework. Section 10 states that data from children under 13 is not knowingly collected.
Who owns the data?
Under section 7 of the terms, Astropulse LLC claims no ownership over your Designs or Customer Materials: you keep full rights to everything you generate, for personal and commercial projects alike. The exception is section 2, 'Your Submissions': any question, suggestion or piece of feedback you send the company becomes its intellectual property, with no compensation. Anything you post in public areas, such as the community style gallery or your profile, is visible to third parties, and the privacy policy disclaims responsibility for how others reuse it. Section 19 puts backups on you: the publisher accepts no liability for lost data.
Reuse rights
You can reuse everything you generate without asking: the learn-more FAQ states that all art you generate is yours to use for personal or commercial projects, and no attribution or extra fee is mentioned. On the company's side, section 2 of the privacy policy lists its own uses of your data: running and improving the service, authentication, support, transactions, moderation, personalization, opt-in communications, fraud prevention and legal obligations. Section 3 says personal information is not sold, but is shared with service providers (hosting, payment, analytics, moderation, security), with authorities, in a merger or sale, or with your consent. Section 5 adds human and automated moderation of prompts and content, which may involve temporary storage and review of your inputs and outputs. Neither document says anything about model training on customer content: no commitment either way, and no documented opt-out.
Data retention & training
Hosting summary
Astropulse LLC states plainly, in section 6 of the privacy policy and section 10 of the terms, that the services are hosted in the United States. Accessing them from anywhere else means your information is transferred to and processed in the United States, and the policy treats continued use as consent to that transfer. There is no region choice and no data residency option. No subprocessor is named: the privacy policy lists only categories of providers, namely hosting, payment, analytics, moderation and security, with no company names, no list to consult and no data processing agreement on offer. One technical caveat is worth flagging: the domain resolves to 18.244.18.75, an Amazon address (AS16509) in Frankfurt, which points to an Amazon CloudFront edge node rather than to where data is actually stored. The declared jurisdiction remains the United States.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Retro Diffusion.
- No mention of the GDPR anywhere, no Article 27 EU representative and no data protection officer, which leaves a European buyer with nothing to audit
- Nothing is said about whether prompts and images feed model training, neither a commitment not to train nor an opt-out, while prompts and outputs are temporarily stored and reviewed by human and automated moderation
- No postal address is published, so the company's place of business cannot be identified; the support address even sits on retrodiffusion.com while the service runs on retrodiffusion.ai, and the terms themselves name the site as retrodiffusion.com
- The legal documents are PDFs embedded in a JavaScript application rather than HTML pages, so they are not indexable and reading them depends on client-side rendering
- Hosting is United States only and consent to the transfer is deemed given by use, with no security certification displayed and no list of subprocessors
- Any question, suggestion or piece of feedback you send becomes the publisher's intellectual property under section 2 of the terms, without compensation
- Purchases are non-refundable, liability is capped at the greater of $100 or the amount paid in the previous month, RapidRuling arbitration is mandatory and class actions are waived, and the minimum age of 13 sits below the 15 or 16 applied in several EU countries
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Very low for ordinary use: nothing to install, create an account and generate straight away, with every model and tool available from the start; the Pixel Art Fixer works in the browser without an account at all. Low for developers too: sign in, create a key from the API tab, then call a single HTTP endpoint authenticated with an X-RD-Token header, with Python and Node.js samples on GitHub. The hosted MCP server is a URL to paste into a compatible assistant, with nothing to deploy. Custom styles need only a few reference images: no training queue, no extra fee.

Should you pick Retro Diffusion?
Retro Diffusion does one job and does it with unusual conviction. The promise is technical rather than decorative: grid-aligned pixels, controlled palettes, transparent backgrounds and animation frames that actually cycle. The product is built around it, with three generation models, a documented catalog of 83 or more styles, tileset and UI production, eight editing tools, custom styles trained from a handful of references, and a free Pixel Art Fixer that repairs the pixel-ish output of general-purpose models. The economics are refreshingly plain. There is no subscription and no tier to compare: you buy a prepaid balance, the price of each generation is shown before you commit, failed generations are refunded automatically and credits never expire. Fifty credits arrive free with a new account, no card required, and a $5 pack is enough to find out whether the models suit your art direction, with commercial rights on everything you generate. The reservation is not the product but the paperwork. For a European buyer the file is thin: no postal address anywhere, no mention of the GDPR, no data processing agreement, no subprocessor list, no security certification, and complete silence on whether customer content is used to train models. Data is hosted in the United States and the transfer is presented as consented to by use; purchases are non-refundable, disputes go to mandatory arbitration under New Hampshire law, and the legal documents are embedded PDFs rather than pages. That is the profile of a very small, founder-led company with no known outside funding, not of a supplier that has been through procurement. The natural audience is clear: indie game developers, pixel artists, art directors and small studios who need consistent, game-ready assets quickly and cheaply, and who can live with a light legal file.
