Overview

What is Scifocus?

Scifocus is an AI assistant built specifically for academic research and academic writing, promoted under the line Supercharge Your Academic Studies with Our AI Research Assistant. It runs entirely in the browser and is operated by Scifocus AI; a company named SCIFOCUS PTE. LTD. was registered with Singapore's ACRA register on 17 January 2025 under UEN 202502680H. The domain itself was registered on 7 November 2024 and first captured by the Wayback Machine on 13 November 2024.

The service is organised around two products. The Daily Academic Toolkit gathers more than 50 modules — 13 essay tools and 42 research-support tools — including Paraphraser for Academic and Paraphraser for Formal, Grammar Checker, Essay Writer, Document Summarizer, Citation Generate Tool, Abstract Generator, Research Methods, Academic Searchlight, Sentence Expander, Content Summarizer and Content Rewriter. Research Assistant Pro adds more than 20 modules and four integrated academic blocks aimed at publishable output: Research Highlights Extractor, Literature Analyzer, Peer Review Assistant, Mini Review, Academic RefLetter, Pro Translator, SciDoc Generator and Paragraph Generator. The advertised workflow runs in four steps — define your research objectives, choose the relevant tools, revise and refine, prepare for publication — inside a web text editor, with 34 free tools exposed separately under the /trial section.

What Scifocus presents as its differentiator is a model-agnostic architecture. In its own words, it is “a suite of large language models (Deepseek, Chatgpt, Claude), seamlessly switching between different LLMs to perfectly adapt to various research content needs”, and it claims a language model trained on scientific papers plus STM expertise: “But what truly sets us apart is our unparalleled scientific foundation.” The site positions the product against ChatGPT, Grammarly, QuillBot, Paperpal, Wordtune, Scribbr, Perplexity, Jenni AI, Scite and HIX.AI.

The limits are worth stating plainly. The interface exists in English only. There is no public API and no mobile application, so nothing can be automated or used offline. The testimonials attributed to professors, postdocs and clinical trial coordinators carry no verifiable institutional affiliation. And the publisher gives no postal address, no legal notice page and no contact page — support runs through email alone, on a company registered barely a year and a half ago.

What it does

  • Run a literature review and generate a review outline from a handful of keywords
  • Draft a research paper, a review article or a structured case report
  • Pull the key findings out of scientific papers with the Research Highlights Extractor
  • Paraphrase text into an academic or formal register and check its grammar
  • Generate citations and convert them between styles, APA included
  • Answer reviewer comments and prepare a manuscript for submission
  • Summarise an uploaded document, generate an abstract, or translate into academic English

When to use Scifocus / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if Scifocus is the right fit.

When to use Scifocus

  • Undergraduate and master's students writing essays, dissertations and theses under deadline
  • PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers preparing journal articles and literature reviews
  • Non-native English speakers who need academic paraphrasing and the Pro Translator module
  • Peer reviewers and academic editors handling review reports and replies to reviewers
  • Budget-conscious academics, with an entry plan at USD 6.99 per month on annual billing

When not to use Scifocus

  • Anyone seeking medical, legal, financial, trading or investment advice: the terms state the service is for informational purposes only and unsuitable for professional use
  • Justice, law enforcement, immigration, asylum and profiling use cases, which the terms prohibit outright
  • Businesses wanting commercial deployment: the licence granted covers personal, non-commercial use, and building a competing product or training models on the service is forbidden
  • Developers and teams needing programmatic access or mobile working: there is no public API, no developer documentation and no iOS or Android app
  • Under-18s without parental consent, and high-volume writers, since every plan carries a monthly word quota except the unlimited Toolkit on Ultimate

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • A clear academic specialisation, where general-purpose assistants stay generic
  • Two complementary products: one for day-to-day student writing, one for scientific publication
  • Model choice is not locked in — ChatGPT, Claude and DeepSeek, on every paid plan
  • A low entry price, USD 6.99 per month on annual billing, below most general writing assistants
  • A free trial with no credit card required, plus 34 tools usable under /trial without a subscription
  • A published refund policy with a 7-day window, stated as identical in every country
  • Complete legal documentation — terms, privacy, refund, EEA and California sections — with processing providers named (OpenAI, Anthropic, Stripe)

Cons

  • The pricing page contradicts itself: the visible FAQ shows USD 6.99 and 10.99, while the JSON-LD structured data of that same page shows USD 12.99 and 15.99
  • Plan names contradict each other too: the pricing page calls the top plan Ultimate, the refund page calls it Unlimited
  • Two conflicting support addresses inside the same terms page — support@scifocus.com in sections 6 and 13, support@scifocus.ai in the footer — the first on a separate, unverified domain
  • The publisher is barely identifiable: no postal address, no legal notice page, no contact page, and a company name that floats between “Scifocus AI” in the terms and “Scifocus.AI” in the copyright
  • The /pricing page is linked from no navigation and its price block is rendered in JavaScript: the amounts are readable only in the FAQ, and the page itself is reachable through the sitemap alone
  • Very broad rights over your inputs: a perpetual, irrevocable licence, inputs deemed non-confidential, and no stated exclusion from model training
  • No API, no mobile app, no DPA, no Article 27 EU representative and no hosting country disclosed; testimonials carry no verifiable affiliation, and the company was only registered in January 2025
Pricing

Pricing & Plans

Scifocus does not advertise a permanent free plan. Access begins with a free trial that requires no credit card and is capped at 800 generated words and 5 stored files. Paid access starts at USD 6.99 per month for the Basic plan. That figure, like the other two, is a monthly rate calculated on annual billing, as the pricing FAQ states explicitly: “(The above monthly rates are based on annual billing.)” A Monthly / Annually toggle advertises savings of “up to 43%”, but the strictly monthly rates are not readable, the price block being rendered in JavaScript. One reservation must be recorded: the JSON-LD structured data of that same pricing page carries USD 12.99 for Basic and USD 15.99 for Pro, a contradiction the site does not resolve. Payment runs through Stripe, monthly or annually, with automatic renewal. A refund may be obtained within 7 days if less than 10% of the word quota has been consumed; voluntary cancellation does not refund the period under way, and price increases are notified at least 30 days in advance.

Caution
  • the refund page names the top plan “Unlimited” while the pricing page names it “Ultimate”
  • and the structured data of the pricing page quotes USD 12.99 and 15.99 for Basic and Pro
Special offers — Annual billing advertised as saving “up to 43%” against monthly billing · Free trial of 800 generated words and 5 stored files, with no credit card required · Ultimate plan: 5,000 bonus words per month on Research Assistant Pro, on top of the 10,000 included · 34 free tools available under the /trial section without any subscription · No promo code and no dedicated student discount were found, despite the academic audience

Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Scifocus handles your data.

GDPR overview

GDPR is addressed explicitly, not implicitly. The privacy policy carries a dedicated “EEA SPECIFIC TERMS” section for people located in the European Economic Area, and states three legal bases: legitimate interest, consent and legal obligation. The rights offered are access, rectification, erasure or restriction, objection and withdrawal of consent, exercised free of charge, with a target answer within one month, extendable by two further months for complex requests. Transfers outside the EEA rely on the European Commission-approved Standard Contractual Clauses. GDPR requests go to privacy@scifocus.ai, and the policy has been in force since 9 January 2025. A separate California section covers CCPA rights. Two concrete gaps: no EU representative is designated under Article 27, and no data protection officer is named. Scifocus never claims compliance in so many words.

Who owns the data?

Scifocus's terms separate Input from Output. You keep every right in the Input you submit, but grant Scifocus a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, perpetual and irrevocable licence over it, and all Input is deemed non-confidential: “You agree that any Input you submit to Scifocus is considered non-confidential, and we have the right to use and distribute these Inputs freely for any purpose, without acknowledgment or compensation to you.” You own the Output — Scifocus assigns you any rights it may hold in it — and in return receives a perpetual, irrevocable licence to use that Output for any Scifocus-related purpose. Reproducing generated content requires crediting the service and the context of creation.

Reuse rights

Because you own the Output, you may reuse what Scifocus generates without asking permission, subject to one condition: reproducing generated content requires citing the service and the context in which it was created. On the collection side, Scifocus records your username, email address, password, the content you submit (text, images, datasets, files, conversation history), your IP address, device type, browser, login method, and the times and frequency of your usage. Stated purposes are identification, delivering and improving the service, support, payment processing, legal compliance and, with your consent, marketing. Sharing is named rather than generic: “Language Processing Service Providers, such as ChatGPT by OpenAI and Claude by Anthropic” receive what you type in order to generate answers, Stripe receives payment and order data, and Google Analytics sets the _ga and anonymous_user_id cookies alongside the functional token, userInfo, product-store, visited, sci-cur-path and sci-pre-path cookies. Signing in with Google hands Scifocus the email address of that account. The privacy policy states personal data is not sold without explicit consent, and the terms allow content to be used to “facilitate, maintain, develop, and enhance” the service — model training is never mentioned either way.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Scifocus keeps personal data “for the duration deemed necessary to fulfil the purposes and objectives outlined in this Privacy Policy”. No figure and no maximum period are published. Retention may be extended to meet legal obligations, handle disputes and enforce agreements. Users may request deletion, which Scifocus performs where the law allows, warning that time may pass before data disappears from active and backup systems. The company also reserves the right to delete data at any time without notice, and disclaims liability for doing so. Stored work history is capped by plan: 50 files on Basic, 100 on Pro, unlimited on Ultimate, and 5 during the free trial. Requests are acknowledged within 15 days and answered within 45 under CCPA; under GDPR the target is one month, extendable by two.

Hosting summary

Scifocus names no hosting country and no hosting region. Its privacy policy states: “We may maintain servers around the world and your information may be processed on servers located outside of the country where you live.” It adds that some recipients may sit in jurisdictions offering a lower level of protection, and that safeguards apply, without detailing them. For transfers out of the EEA, the policy relies on the European Commission-approved Standard Contractual Clauses. In practice the site is served behind Cloudflare (anycast IP 104.21.88.71), which says nothing about where user content is stored. Generation itself involves the third parties named in the policy, OpenAI and Anthropic, and payments run through Stripe, so content leaves Scifocus's own perimeter by design. No certification is claimed: neither SOC 2 nor ISO 27001 appears anywhere on the site. Security is described in general terms only, with references to encryption and authentication methods, and no data processing agreement is offered. Anyone under jurisdictional constraints should treat the hosting location as undetermined.

Watch-outs

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Scifocus.

  • The publisher cannot be identified from the site: no postal address, no legal notice, no contact page, and a company name that floats between “Scifocus AI” in the terms and “Scifocus.AI” in the copyright, while Singapore's ACRA register lists SCIFOCUS PTE. LTD.
  • Two contradictory support addresses in the same terms page — support@scifocus.com in sections 6 and 13, support@scifocus.ai in the footer — and scifocus.com is a separate, unverified domain; every email address on the site is obfuscated by Cloudflare
  • Contradictory prices on the pricing page, USD 6.99 / 10.99 in the visible FAQ against USD 12.99 / 15.99 in the JSON-LD of that same page, and contradictory plan names, Ultimate on the pricing page against Unlimited on the refund page: confirm what you will actually be charged
  • Your inputs carry a perpetual, irrevocable, sub-licensable licence and are declared non-confidential — do not paste unpublished results, patient data, or anything under embargo or NDA
  • No guarantee that your data is excluded from model training, no hosting country disclosed (“servers around the world”), no DPA and no Article 27 EU representative
  • Disputes go to SIAC arbitration in Singapore before a three-arbitrator tribunal, an expensive route for an individual; the terms also confine the licence to personal, non-commercial use and forbid regulated professional use
  • Academic integrity and skill erosion: leaning on generated paraphrases, abstracts and review answers can breach institutional plagiarism rules and dull the critical reading and writing the work is meant to build — and with a company registered in January 2025, the operating track record is short
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Very low. Scifocus is a web application: nothing to install, nothing to configure. You sign up with an email address and a password, or in one click with a Google account, and the free trial asks for no credit card. The 34 free tools under /trial can even be used straight from the page, without an account. There is no API, no SDK and no integration to wire up, so no technical skill beyond ordinary browser use is required. The only real learning curve is editorial: choosing the right module among the fifty-odd available, and framing a usable prompt.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Who is Scifocus designed for?
Scifocus targets students — from high school through undergraduate, master's and doctoral level — and researchers. The site presents it as intuitive enough for beginners and robust enough for experienced researchers. The terms set a minimum age of 18, with parental consent required below that.
Which AI models does Scifocus run on?
Scifocus describes itself as a suite of large language models, switching between ChatGPT, Claude and DeepSeek to match different research content needs. The plan comparison table names GPT-4o and Claude 3.5, and multi-LLM access is included on all three paid plans.
Is there a free trial or a free plan?
There is a free trial, not a permanent free plan. It requires no credit card and is capped at 800 generated words and 5 stored files. Separately, 34 tools under the /trial section can be used from the page without an account.
How much does Scifocus cost?
Three paid plans: Basic at USD 6.99, Pro at USD 10.99 and Ultimate at USD 35.99 per month, these monthly rates being calculated on annual billing, as the pricing FAQ states. Note that the structured data of the same page quotes USD 12.99 and USD 15.99 for Basic and Pro — a contradiction the site leaves unresolved, so check the amount actually charged before subscribing.
Can I get a refund?
Yes, within 7 days, provided less than 10% of your word quota has been consumed. Scifocus states the refund policy does not differentiate across countries. Voluntary cancellation does not refund the billing period already under way, and refunds are processed within stated delays of 3 and 5 working days.
What is the difference between the Daily Academic Toolkit and Research Assistant Pro?
The Daily Academic Toolkit covers everyday academic writing — essays, emails, paraphrasing, proofreading — across more than 50 modules. Research Assistant Pro targets publishable academic output, with more than 20 modules and four integrated academic blocks running from hypothesis to submission.
Does Scifocus train AI models on my content?
The site never says, in either direction. The terms allow Scifocus to use Content to “facilitate, maintain, develop, and enhance” its services, and the privacy policy speaks of refining and improving them, but model training is never named in so many words, and no opt-out from training is documented anywhere.
Who else receives my data?
The privacy policy names its language processing providers: OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Anthropic (Claude) receive the content you submit in order to generate answers. Stripe receives payment and order data, and Google Analytics collects audience data through the _ga and anonymous_user_id cookies.
Is there an API or a mobile app?
Neither. A full review of the sitemap, 439 URLs, turned up no API page and no developer documentation, and the site displays no App Store or Google Play badge. Scifocus is a web application, used in the browser only.
Where is my data hosted, and is GDPR covered?
No hosting country is named: the privacy policy says servers may be maintained around the world and information processed outside your country of residence. GDPR is addressed through a dedicated EEA section, stated legal bases, data subject rights and the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses for transfers, with requests going to privacy@scifocus.ai. No Article 27 EU representative and no DPO are named.
Conclusion

Should you pick Scifocus?

Scifocus is a genuinely specialised tool. On its own ground — academic research and academic writing — it is credible: two complementary products, more than seventy modules between them, coverage running from literature review to submission preparation, and a choice of underlying model between ChatGPT, Claude and DeepSeek. The entry price of USD 6.99 per month on annual billing sits below most general-purpose writing assistants, the free trial asks for no credit card, and a published refund policy gives a 7-day window.

Contractual transparency is where the picture turns uneven. The legal documentation is unusually complete for so young a product — terms, privacy policy, refund policy, dedicated EEA and California sections, processing providers named — yet the publisher itself is barely identifiable. The site gives no postal address, no legal notice and no contact page; the company name shifts between “Scifocus AI” and “Scifocus.AI”; and the entity behind it, SCIFOCUS PTE. LTD., was registered in Singapore only in January 2025. Two internal contradictions remain unresolved: USD 6.99 and 10.99 in the visible pricing FAQ against USD 12.99 and 15.99 in the structured data of the same page, and a top plan called Ultimate on one page and Unlimited on another. The licence taken over your inputs is very broad, and those inputs are deemed non-confidential.

Our reading: Scifocus is a reasonable fit for everyday student and research work — essays, paraphrasing, citations, summaries, the first draft of a review. Treat it with caution for anything sensitive or unpublished: confidential datasets, embargoed results, patient data or material under NDA have no place in a service that reserves a perpetual, irrevocable licence over what you type. And verify the price actually charged before subscribing.
