Overview

What is Sema4.ai?

Sema4.ai is an enterprise AI agent platform built for the back office, not for general-purpose assistance. The publisher, Sema4.ai, Inc., is headquartered at 3340 Peachtree Rd NE in Atlanta, Georgia, keeps a second office in Helsinki, Finland, and calls itself 'The Enterprise AI Agent Company'. Its argument starts from a stated problem: only 12% of enterprise AI proofs of concept reach production, and that gap stalls three quarters of enterprise AI initiatives. The platform is described in three layers. An agent layer covers whole workflows such as quote-to-cash and procure-to-pay; a context layer gives a coherent view of data across systems with natural-language interaction; an admin layer keeps the experience usable by business people. Seven named components sit underneath: Agent Studio, Runbooks, Control Room, Actions, Work Room, Document Intelligence and Dynamic Data Access. Runbooks are the distinctive piece, since agents are defined and maintained in plain English by business users, with no code. Worker Agents then run 24/7 on event triggers, while Conversational Agents handle ad hoc work. What separates Sema4.ai from most hosted agent products is where the work happens: agents execute in the customer's own cloud account, AWS, Azure, GCP or Snowflake, using the customer's approved language models, among them OpenAI, Microsoft Azure, Amazon Bedrock and Snowflake Cortex. Governance is a first-class theme, with COSO-aligned controls, a three-lens model treating each agent as analyst, auditor and engineer, deterministic execution, audit trails and exportable evidence packages. SOC 2, ISO 27001 and HIPAA are displayed for Control Room. Agents are consumed from the Work Room, from Microsoft Teams or from Slack with @mentions and threads, and a REST API v3, an Agent API, a Work Item API, an SDK and MCP support make the platform programmable; it also ships as a Snowflake native application and through AWS Marketplace. Sema4.ai claims datasets 100x larger than an LLM context window, 94% fewer tokens for data analysis, 100% document accuracy and agents doing over 80% of the work in their use cases, all published without a methodology. Its founders come from Cloudera, Hortonworks, Docker and AWS, and Emerson and Koch are named customers.

What it does

  • Automate invoice reconciliation, with more than 90% automation claimed by the vendor
  • Run a supplier help desk for accounts payable: Sema4.ai reports 90% of AP requests handled and response times cut to ten minutes or less
  • Match remittances to payments straight from remittance emails, with up to 90% less manual handling according to the vendor
  • Read and understand documents of more than 200 pages and pull out the data a decision depends on
  • Monitor regulatory change, producing change reports and forecasting their impact
  • Support procurement sourcing and supply chain processes end to end
  • Run Worker Agents around the clock, triggered by events in email, business applications and data sources

When to use Sema4.ai / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if Sema4.ai is the right fit.

When to use Sema4.ai

  • Large enterprises whose back office runs on document- and data-heavy, multi-step processes; Emerson and Koch are named as design partners
  • Finance departments and the Office of the CFO, which the platform addresses directly with invoice reconciliation, payment matching and accounts payable help desks
  • Procurement and supply chain teams handling sourcing, supplier requests and planning workflows
  • Audit, risk and compliance functions that need deterministic calculations, COSO-aligned controls and exportable evidence packages
  • Non-technical business users backed by a regulated IT organisation: agents are written in plain English but execute inside the company's own cloud with its own approved language models

When not to use Sema4.ai

  • Individuals and small businesses: all three plans lead to 'Contact sales', with no published amount to budget against
  • Anyone wanting to try before buying, since no free plan and no free trial is announced anywhere on the site, and Departmental and Enterprise both assume an enterprise cloud account and an already-approved LLM
  • Teams without an AWS, Azure, GCP or Snowflake account and without an IT function able to handle SSO, connections and API keys
  • Users who need a mobile app or a non-English interface: no App Store or Google Play listing exists and no interface language other than English is declared
  • Marketing, creative and direct-sales teams: nothing on the site addresses those functions, the whole platform being aimed at back-office operations

How to use Sema4.ai

A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.

  1. There is no self-service sign-up: the entry point is the 'Get a demo' page or a conversation with the sales team
  2. Start with the Starter Pack, which the pricing FAQ recommends as the fastest first step: it is hosted by Sema4.ai and includes dedicated time from a deployment engineer to validate a first use case
  3. Build the agent in Agent Studio, describing what it should do in plain English, with real-time AI suggestions, intent discovery and document analysis
  4. Write and refine the Runbook that defines the agent's behaviour, then share it with the team
  5. Connect the agent to systems and data through pre-built connectors, Actions (automation-as-code in Python) and MCP servers
  6. Test in Draft mode before anything reaches production
  7. Publish and deploy, with one-click deployment advertised, plus versioning, progressive rollouts and rollback
  8. Let business users work with the agent from the Work Room, Microsoft Teams or Slack, using @mentions, threads and rich interactions
  9. Supervise from Control Room: SSO, audit, observability and lifecycle management
  10. Administer workspaces, teams, users, OIDC role mapping, connections and API keys, leaning on the documentation's separate quickstarts for IT, builders and analysts and on the community Slack channel open by invitation

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Agents run in the customer's own cloud and with the customer's own language models, so operational data does not have to be handed over to the vendor
  • Business users can build and maintain agents in plain English through Runbooks, without writing code
  • Governance is unusually developed for an agent platform: COSO-aligned controls, the three-lens analyst, auditor and engineer model, deterministic execution and exportable evidence packages
  • Security certifications are displayed (SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA) alongside a public Trust Center
  • The platform is genuinely integrable, with a full REST API, an SDK, native MCP support and a ready-made connector catalogue covering Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Snowflake, Stripe, Ramp and GitHub
  • Documentation is extensive, with separate quickstarts for IT, builders and analysts, and the product is distributed through AWS Marketplace and as a Snowflake native application
  • The company is verifiable: a real EU office in Helsinki with a named European representative, named reference customers (Emerson, Koch) with signed testimonials, and founders from Cloudera, Hortonworks, Docker and AWS

Cons

  • No public price at all: Starter Pack, Departmental and Enterprise carry the same 'Contact sales' button, with no amount, currency or billing unit anywhere
  • No free plan and no free trial is announced, and Departmental and Enterprise both assume an enterprise cloud account and an already-approved language model, which makes the barrier to entry high
  • No subprocessor list and no data processing agreement appear anywhere on the site, which is unusual for an enterprise offer that advertises SOC 2 and ISO 27001
  • No documented way for a customer to exclude its data from model training; the only published training prohibition is scoped to Google user data
  • The published terms and conditions govern the website only, product use falling under a separate enterprise agreement that is not public
  • The performance figures (100x, 94% fewer tokens, 100% accuracy, more than 90% automation) are vendor claims with no published methodology, and the certifications are stated for Control Room rather than for the whole platform
  • No support email address, no mobile application, no declared interface language other than English, and a Trust Center rendered entirely in JavaScript whose compliance evidence cannot be checked without a browser
Pricing

Pricing & Plans

Sema4.ai publishes no price. The three plans, Starter Pack, Departmental and Enterprise, all carry the same 'Contact sales' button, and no amount, currency or billing period appears on the pricing page. No free plan and no free trial is announced. The model is presented as transparent, consumption-based pricing, with outcome-based pricing available and negotiated case by case with the vendor's team. Sema4.ai does describe levers for keeping the bill under control: per-agent analytics, automatic routing of simple tasks to less expensive models, and reusable verified queries instead of regenerating an answer through a language model each time. One point belongs in any budget: because Departmental and Enterprise agents run in the customer's own cloud with the customer's own models, the cloud and model costs stay on the customer's side, on top of whatever is agreed with Sema4.ai.

Starter Pack (Featured plan, 'Contact sales')
  • presented as the fastest way to get started building and deploying AI agents hosted by Sema4.ai. Includes rapid deployment of a first use case
  • dedicated time from a deployment engineer and a proven delivery methodology. Hosted by Sema4.ai rather than by the customer

  • positioned to deploy and manage custom AI agents across departments. Unlimited users
  • agents and connections
  • 10 Work Rooms
  • 2 enterprise admin seats and 5 departmental admin seats
  • SSO integration
  • your cloud
  • Conversational and Worker Agents
  • and knowledge sharing across departments

Prices and plans listed above may evolve. Always check the official pricing page before subscribing.
Trust & Privacy

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Sema4.ai handles your data.

GDPR overview

The product page states that the platform is 'GDPR adherent for EU data privacy regulations' and displays SOC 2, ISO 27001 and HIPAA for Control Room. A representative in Europe is named in the privacy policy, Sampo Ahokas (sampo@sema4.ai), and privacy requests go to privacy@sema4.ai. Rights offered cover access, rectification, erasure, portability, restriction, objection, opt-out of sharing and targeted advertising, and appeal against a refusal. Cross-border transfers rely on a European Commission or UK adequacy decision, or on pre-approved contractual clauses; the company is headquartered in the United States with service providers in other countries, and keeps a real EU office in Helsinki. What is absent matters too: no subprocessor list, no data processing agreement anywhere on the site, no response to 'Do Not Track' signals, and a Trust Center that cannot be read without JavaScript.

Who owns the data?

The privacy policy in force since 30 October 2024 names two joint controllers of personal information: Sema4.ai and Robocorp Technologies, Inc. Content uploaded by the user (text, images, audio, video and metadata) is listed among the categories collected, and personal information may be disclosed if the business is transferred through a merger, sale or bankruptcy. Google user data is treated apart: it stays exclusively on the user's own device, never reaches Sema4.ai servers, and is never shared, sold or transferred to third parties. On the product side, Departmental and Enterprise agents execute inside the customer's own cloud account, so operational data stays under the customer's control rather than the vendor's.

Reuse rights

The privacy policy lists the purposes Sema4.ai claims for personal data: delivering the service, direct marketing, building a user profile, security, communication, improvement and personalisation, research and development, legal compliance, and the creation of anonymised or aggregated data. The legal bases invoked are legitimate interest, performance of a contract and, where the law requires it, consent. Disclosure categories include service providers, advertising partners, third-party platforms and professional advisers. Three exclusions are explicit, but all of them are scoped to Google user data: it is not used to develop, improve or train generalised AI or ML models, no human is allowed to read it, and it is used neither for advertising nor for credit scoring. No published statement covers enterprise customer data in general, which is why the training question stays open. Configuring the language model so that it does not retain or train on your data is explicitly stated to be the customer's own responsibility.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
The privacy policy in force since 30 October 2024 sets out a principle rather than a duration: personal information is kept for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes it was collected for, including legal, accounting and reporting obligations, establishing or defending legal claims, and fraud prevention. The length is decided case by case, weighing the volume, nature and sensitivity of the data, the risk of harm, the purposes pursued, whether another route exists, the permissions given and legal requirements. At the end of that period, data is deleted or anonymised; where deletion is impossible, as in backup archives, it is stored securely and isolated from any processing until deletion becomes possible. Anonymised data may be used indefinitely without notice. No figure is ever published. Google user data differs: it stays on the user's machine, with no persistent storage beyond the current session or task. Deletion requests go to privacy@sema4.ai.

Hosting summary

Where data lives depends on the plan. For Departmental and Enterprise, agents execute in the customer's own cloud account, Sema4.ai stating that agents run in your AWS, Azure, GCP or Snowflake account for complete control over your security and compliance. Hosting of operational data is therefore chosen by the customer, not by the vendor. The Starter Pack is the exception, being explicitly hosted by Sema4.ai. On the vendor's own side, the terms state that the site is hosted in the United States, and the domain sits behind Cloudflare (anycast IP 104.26.5.199, which identifies a CDN node rather than an origin server). The privacy policy says the company is headquartered in the United States with service providers in other countries, and that personal information may be transferred to the United States or elsewhere. Google user data is a special case, stored exclusively on the user's own machine and never reaching Sema4.ai servers. Two gaps remain: no country or region is named for customer data hosting in any dedicated document, and no subprocessor list is published.

Watch-outs

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Sema4.ai.

  • The published terms and conditions govern the website only: product use falls under a separate enterprise agreement that is not public, so no product terms can be read before signing. Sema4.ai also states it may change those terms at any time without prior notice, the revised version taking effect as soon as it is posted
  • California law applies and the state and federal courts of San Francisco have exclusive jurisdiction, which is a real constraint for a European customer
  • Sema4.ai can restrict, suspend or terminate access at any time, without notice and without liability, under a very broad disclaimer with indemnification borne by the user
  • Personal data has two joint controllers, Sema4.ai and Robocorp Technologies, Inc.: two entities covered by a single policy, so check which one you are actually dealing with
  • No subprocessor list and no data processing agreement are published despite SOC 2 and ISO 27001 being advertised, the Trust Center meant to document them is unreadable without JavaScript, and the certifications are declared for Control Room rather than for the whole platform
  • No customer-side opt-out from model training is documented, the privacy policy explicitly makes the customer responsible for configuring its language model so that it neither retains nor trains on its data, and the site does not honour 'Do Not Track' signals
  • Sema4.ai claims its agents handle more than 80% of the work in their use cases; handing that share of a back-office process to agents whose performance figures come without any published methodology calls for the customer's own controls and for keeping a human eye on what the agents decide
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Moderate to high, and it depends on the plan. There is no self-service sign-up: entry goes through a demo or a sales conversation. The Starter Pack is designed to lower the barrier, hosted by Sema4.ai and bundled with dedicated deployment-engineer time. Departmental and Enterprise require an enterprise cloud account (AWS, Azure, GCP or Snowflake), already-approved language models, and administration of workspaces, teams, users, SSO, OIDC role mapping, connections and API keys. Building the agents themselves is the easy part, in plain English and without code. The documentation's three separate quickstarts, for IT, for builders and for analysts, confirm that at least two profiles are needed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does Sema4.ai cost?
No price is published. Starter Pack, Departmental and Enterprise all carry the same 'Contact sales' button. Sema4.ai describes its model as transparent, consumption-based pricing, and says outcome-based pricing can be discussed with its team depending on the use case.
Is there a free plan or a free trial?
Nothing of the kind is announced on the site. Every route into the product goes through a demo request or a conversation with sales.
Where should a company start?
The pricing FAQ points to the Starter Pack. Hosted by Sema4.ai, it comes with dedicated time from a deployment engineer to validate a first use case and prove the return on investment.
Where do the agents actually run?
For Departmental and Enterprise, agents run in the customer's own cloud account: AWS, Azure, GCP or Snowflake. The Starter Pack is the exception, since it is hosted by Sema4.ai.
Which language models can be used?
Those the enterprise has already approved. Sema4.ai names OpenAI, Microsoft Azure, Amazon Bedrock and Snowflake Cortex.
Is there an API?
Yes. A REST API v3 covering auth, projects, runs, tasks, work items, integrations and audit, plus an Agent API, a Work Item API, an SDK and MCP support.
Can agents be used inside Slack or Microsoft Teams?
Yes. Agents can be deployed to both channels, with @mentions, threads and rich interactions.
Which certifications does Sema4.ai display?
SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA and a 'GDPR adherent' statement. Note that they are presented for Control Room, and that the Trust Center meant to document them is rendered entirely in JavaScript.
Is there a mobile application?
No. No App Store or Google Play link appears anywhere on the site: the product is web and API only.
Who handles privacy requests, and is there a minimum age?
Privacy requests go to privacy@sema4.ai, and the representative in Europe named in the privacy policy is Sampo Ahokas (sampo@sema4.ai). No minimum age is given: the policy only states that, as a general rule, children are not allowed to use the service.
Conclusion

Should you pick Sema4.ai?

Sema4.ai has chosen a narrow position and holds it. This is not a general-purpose assistant but an agent platform for the enterprise back office, aimed at invoice reconciliation, payment matching, supplier help desks and regulatory monitoring, where outcomes must be deterministic and auditable. The real differentiator is architectural: for Departmental and Enterprise, agents execute in the customer's own cloud account with the customer's own approved language models, so operational data never moves to the vendor. The signs of maturity are there. Documentation is extensive, the REST API and MCP support are real, SOC 2, ISO 27001 and HIPAA are displayed, Emerson and Koch are named as customers with signed testimonials, and the product is distributed through AWS Marketplace and as a Snowflake native application. Runbooks in plain English are a credible answer to the gap between IT and the business. What the site does not publish deserves as much attention. Pricing is entirely opaque: three plans, one button, no amount, no trial. There is no subprocessor list and no data processing agreement, surprising for an enterprise offer that advertises SOC 2 and ISO 27001. No mechanism lets a customer exclude its data from model training, and configuring the language model so that it neither retains nor trains on data is explicitly the customer's job. The published terms cover the website only, the contract governing the product being a separate, non-public enterprise agreement. The headline numbers, 100x, 94%, 100% accuracy and 90% automation, are vendor claims without a published methodology, and the certifications are stated for Control Room rather than for the whole platform. Sema4.ai is a serious option for a large organisation with an IT department, a cloud footprint and a legal team able to negotiate. It is not an option for a small business or an individual.
