Thematic
Thematic is an enterprise customer intelligence layer that turns unstructured feedback (surveys, support tickets, call transcripts, app reviews, CRM notes) into traceable themes, scores and reports for CX, VoC and insights teams, without replacing your existing CX suite.
What is Thematic?
Thematic is a SaaS platform for analyzing unstructured customer feedback, positioned as the intelligence layer your CX suite was missing rather than a replacement for it. It is published by Thematic Analysis Inc. in the United States, also registered as Thematic Ltd in New Zealand. The idea goes back to 2015, when founder Alyona Medelyan, an NLP PhD funded by Google and cited by more than 3,000 researchers, was running an NLP consultancy and three companies asked her the same question at once: what actually drives our NPS? The product launched in 2017, after a run through Y Combinator. The platform is built as a five-stage pipeline. Ingest pulls surveys, support tickets, call transcripts, app reviews and CRM notes straight from existing systems or the data warehouse, with PII redaction and translation built in. Unify folds those sources into a single layer organized around how each team works, governed by role-based access, so product sees product friction, operations sees service failures and CX sees the whole picture. Understand runs the Theming Agent, which surfaces themes bottom-up from customer language instead of applying a predefined taxonomy, and every theme traces back to the exact words that created it, so it can be inspected, adjusted and steered. Prioritize uses the Scoring Agent to produce predicted NPS, churn propensity and effort scores from unstructured feedback, without waiting for survey data. Activate pushes Predictive Actions into the tools teams already use: tickets, alerts, dashboards and agent workflows. Named building blocks include Lenses, Themes and Taxonomy, the Theme Editor, Theme Summarizer, Answers, Impact Analysis, Workflows, Waterfall Chart, Deep Dive, and an MCP server that exposes Thematic's data and tools to Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and any MCP-compatible agent while running on Thematic's own infrastructure. The differentiator claimed throughout is white box analysis: themes you can follow back to raw comments, against rigid rules-based taxonomies and untraceable LLM summaries. The site lists 35 integrations plus API, sFTP and file upload, SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and CCPA, and AWS hosting in the region you choose, the United States, the European Union or Australia. A commissioned Forrester Total Economic Impact study is cited for 543% ROI, USD 652,000 in annual savings, payback in under six months and 69% fewer contact center calls, while customers report 92% time savings to insight. Named references include DoorDash, Woolworths, Mitsubishi, Atom Bank, Vodafone, Serato and Mitre 10.
What it does
- Discover themes automatically in your customers' own words, with no taxonomy to build first
- Trace every theme and every score back to the raw comments that produced it
- Quantify how much each theme moves your business metrics
- Generate predicted NPS, churn propensity and effort scores without waiting for survey results
- Unify surveys, tickets, call transcripts, reviews, CRM notes and warehouse data into one layer, with PII masked at ingestion and a view per team
- Route insights to the right teams by creating tickets, triggering alerts and refreshing dashboards
- Query your feedback in plain language from Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot through the MCP server

When to use Thematic
- Enterprise CX and Voice of Customer teams that already run a CX suite and want an analysis layer on top of it rather than a replacement
- Insights and research teams working at volume: Thematic states the platform works best with at least 2,000 rows of verbatims, and the entry plan is sized for 25,000 comments a year
- Teams that have to defend their numbers, since every theme is traceable back to the raw comments behind it
- Multi-team organizations using role-based access, where product, CX, operations and strategy each get their own view of the same feedback
- Consumer-facing brands in retail, financial services, telco, marketplaces, food and entertainment, and teams building AI agents that need one defensible source of customer truth to feed them
When not to use Thematic
- Freelancers, small businesses and small teams: entry pricing starts at USD 25,000 per year
- Anyone who wants to sign up and explore alone, since there is no self-service registration and no permanent free plan; the demo form is the only way in
- Teams with thin feedback volumes, below the 2,000 rows of verbatims Thematic gives as its working minimum
- Organizations shopping for a survey or feedback collection tool: Thematic analyzes data other systems have already gathered, it does not gather it
- Users who need a mobile app, a browser extension, or a documented multilingual interface, none of which Thematic publishes
How to use Thematic
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Fill in the Book a demo form (first name, last name, work email, industry, company size, seniority): there is no self-service sign-up
- Take a custom demo run on your own data, or arrange a comprehensive paid pilot
- Agree a contract sized on comment volume, number of datasets, how each dataset is analyzed and the level of support you need
- Connect your feedback sources through one-click integrations, the API, sFTP or CSV upload, at no extra cost for one-click integrations and file drops
- Let the dedicated onboarding specialists configure the platform and validate the first themes with your team
- Review your first analysis, which Thematic says most teams produce within days of connecting data sources, with no taxonomy workshop and no model training phase
- Refine and validate the AI's themes yourself in the Theme Editor, at scale and without code
- Set up SAML 2.0 single sign-on and role-based access so each team sees its own view
- Work day to day in the web app at client.getthematic.com, with your specialist monitoring theme quality
- Add the MCP server to Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot to question your feedback in plain language
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Themes emerge bottom-up from customer language, so there is no taxonomy to build and none to maintain
- Traceability is claimed end to end: every theme and every score points back to the raw comments
- Fast to value, with first results announced in days and no professional services engagement, and it layers onto the existing stack instead of replacing it
- No training on customer data, no cross-client learning, and each client's data isolated in its own space
- Hosting region chosen by the customer (US, EU or Australia), SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and CCPA, and no breach compromising customer data claimed to date
- 35 one-click integrations with no surcharge, plus API and sFTP, and plain-language access through MCP from the AI assistants teams already use
- A dedicated specialist from day one, external evidence in the form of a commissioned Forrester TEI study, and named reference customers including DoorDash, Woolworths, Mitsubishi, Vodafone and Atom Bank
Cons
- High entry price: USD 25,000 per year, capped at 25,000 comments and 3 datasets, with Enterprise pricing quoted privately
- No self-service sign-up and no permanent free plan; the demo form is the only door in
- The free trial is not an open commercial offer: the terms say Thematic may provide one and reserve the right to change its nature at any time, while the pricing FAQ points to a paid pilot
- Thin legal transparency: no postal address on any page or in the terms PDF, no legal or privacy email, no data processing agreement mentioned and no sub-processor list published
- No Article 27 EU representative is named, even though the vendor is established outside the EU and sells to European buyers
- It does not collect feedback: you need an existing source, and at least 2,000 rows of verbatims for the analysis to be worth much
- No mobile app, no browser extension, no published list of interface or processing languages despite translation being advertised as built in, and a price grid that only appears in the pricing page's HTML rather than its rendered text
Pricing & Plans
There is no free plan. The entry tier, Foundation, is listed at USD 25,000 per year and covers up to 25,000 comments and up to 3 datasets; the Enterprise tier is quoted on request, with no public amount. The services are sold by subscription, and fees are non-cancellable and non-refundable once invoiced. Contract value is set by comment volume, the number of datasets, how each dataset is analyzed and the level of support required, while one-click integrations and CSV uploads carry no additional charge. A free trial is discretionary rather than contractual: the terms of service state only that Thematic may offer one, whereas the pricing FAQ offers a free custom demo on your own data or a comprehensive paid pilot. No trial is available through self-service.

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how Thematic handles your data.
GDPR overview
Thematic states plainly that it complies with GDPR and CCPA, and it holds SOC 2 Type II, with the report shared on request through a CSM or sales. Dedicated API endpoints handle deletion, and data is deleted 30 days after contract termination, a customizable period. Access, rectification and deletion rights go through the contact form, with an administrative fee possible for manifestly unfounded or excessive requests. Transfers outside the EU rely on binding corporate rules and mechanisms approved by the European Commission. The company is registered twice, Thematic Analysis Inc. in the US and Thematic Ltd in New Zealand (NZBN 9429030047624), and the privacy policy is governed by Delaware law. Minimum age is 17. What is missing counts too: no Article 27 EU representative is named, no DPO or dedicated privacy email is published, no data processing agreement is mentioned anywhere, and no sub-processor list exists.
Who owns the data?
Ownership splits three ways. Customer feedback stays with the customer: "Each client's data is stored in its own space within our secure database architecture," used only to deliver the service, with no cross-client learning. Thematic owns the platform itself, every update and upgrade, all derivative works, and any suggestion, idea or feedback a customer sends about the service (Terms of Service, clause 5). Roles shift by data type: for personal data about third parties uploaded by a customer, Thematic is the processor and the customer is the controller; for site visitors and registered users, Thematic is the controller. The vendor actively discourages uploading PII to its systems.
Reuse rights
Customer data serves one purpose: delivering the service. Thematic states that your data is never used for training, that there is no cross-client learning, and that LLMs are used only where retention and use can be guaranteed, in sandboxed conditions. The MCP server runs on Thematic's own infrastructure, and the vendor states that data going through it is not shared with Anthropic, Microsoft or any other model provider. PII can be redacted at ingestion, internal access is limited to what is necessary, and every action is logged and traceable. Nothing in the terms restricts what a customer does with the themes, scores and reports drawn from its own feedback; what the vendor keeps is ownership of the platform and its derivative works. Website and account data follows a separate regime: it supports contract performance, account management, the customer relationship, legal obligations and audit, and may be shared with service providers, subcontractors, payment processors, IT providers, accountants, auditors and lawyers. No financial data is stored, since payment runs through secure third parties. On the website itself, the privacy policy allows advertising networks to collect browsing data through cookies.
Data retention & training
Hosting summary
Thematic runs on AWS and lets each customer choose the hosting region, the United States, the European Union or Australia, to meet data residency requirements. Separate servers are maintained for the US, the EU and ANZ, including for the MCP server. Each client's data sits in its own space within the database architecture. Data is encrypted at rest in the data stores and moves over secure protocols in transit, behind layered controls that include firewalls, intrusion detection and network segmentation. All customer data is treated internally as confidential, access is limited to what is necessary, and actions are logged. The vendor states that no breach compromising customer data has occurred since it began operating. Transfers outside the EU are covered by binding corporate rules and mechanisms approved by the European Commission. One clarification is worth making: the website's IP address resolves to an Amazon CloudFront edge node in Belgium. That is a CDN point of presence, not a storage location. Customer data lives in the region the customer selects.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Thematic.
- The free trial in the terms of service is discretionary: Thematic may offer one and reserves the right to change its nature at any time, while the pricing FAQ offers a paid pilot. Do not build a budget around a trial that may never be granted
- Fees are non-cancellable and non-refundable once invoiced, volumes and services cannot be reduced mid-term, and a stored card may be charged for amounts due without further notification (terms of service, clause 1)
- Platform data is deleted 30 days after the contract ends, and trial data may be deleted within 3 months of the trial ending: plan your export before either deadline
- The headline ROI figures come from a commissioned Forrester Total Economic Impact study, not from an independent measurement, and should be weighed accordingly
- No data processing agreement is published, no sub-processor list exists and no Article 27 EU representative is named, while the privacy policy is governed by Delaware law with exclusive Delaware jurisdiction: all four are worth settling in writing before signing
- No postal address is published anywhere, yet the terms require notices to be sent by registered mail to the address stated on the contract
- Automated themes and predicted scores are easy to over-trust: the vendor itself discourages uploading personal data, and the traceability feature only protects you if someone actually opens the verbatims instead of reading the dashboard as the last word on your customers
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Low. Nothing to install: Thematic is a web platform reached through a browser at client.getthematic.com. Sources connect through one-click integrations, the API, sFTP or CSV upload, and the vendor states that no AI maintenance or technical coding skills are required. Dedicated onboarding specialists configure the platform and validate the first themes with your team, and most teams produce a first analysis within days of connecting data sources: no taxonomy workshop, no model training phase, no maintenance cycle. Themes are refined in a no-code Theme Editor. Enterprise rollouts add SAML 2.0 SSO and role-based access to configure on your side.

Should you pick Thematic?
Thematic is an enterprise tool and makes no attempt to hide it. USD 25,000 a year to start, no self-service sign-up and a demo form as the only front door: small teams are ruled out by design, not by accident. What it sells specifically is traceability. Themes are discovered bottom-up from customer language and can be followed back to the verbatims that produced them, which is the opposite of a rules-based taxonomy you have to keep maintaining and of an LLM summary nobody can audit. It positions itself as a layer over your CX suite rather than a replacement, which lowers the cost of adopting it, assuming the budget exists in the first place. The data posture is solid and documented: no training on customer data, no cross-client learning, isolation per client, your choice of hosting region between the US, the EU and Australia, and SOC 2 Type II with the report available on request. Legal transparency is weaker. There is no postal address anywhere on the site or in the terms PDF, no data processing agreement mentioned, no sub-processor list and no Article 27 EU representative named, all worth raising before signing and especially so for a European buyer. The headline return figures, 543% ROI, USD 652,000 in annual savings and 69% fewer contact center calls, come from a commissioned Forrester Total Economic Impact study and should be read as vendor-sponsored evidence rather than independent measurement. The real decision point is simpler than the feature list. Do you have the feedback volume, which Thematic puts at a minimum of 2,000 rows of verbatims, and the budget that together justify a dedicated intelligence layer? If you do, the traceability argument is a genuine one. If you do not, nothing here scales down to meet you.
