Overview

What is Userflix?

Userflix is an AI-moderated qualitative customer research platform published by Userflix UG (haftungsbeschränkt) in Zülpich, Germany. It is a spin-off of RWTH Aachen, based in Cologne according to its About page, which states that the company was founded in 2025; it was supported by the EXIST Founder Stipend, now completed, and developed through RWTH Innovation. Its co-founders and managing directors are Bruno Recht, who covers product and sales after Porsche Digital, and Maximilian Münker, who leads engineering and AI architecture.

The product replaces the human moderator, not the human participant. An AI moderator holds a voice-to-voice conversation in the participant's own language and asks dynamic follow-up questions instead of reading a fixed script, across more than 50 interview languages. Three modalities are offered - voice, messaging and text interviews - extended by Voice+Vision, which uses the participant's camera and screen, and by conversations embedded directly inside a customer's product. Participants receive a link and join in any browser: no app, no account, no scheduling.

During the session the moderator can present visual stimuli - images, Figma prototypes, live websites, packaging concepts, ad creative - and probe the reaction on the spot. Respondent data from a quantitative survey can be passed in through URL parameters so the interview picks up where the questionnaire stopped, and monadic or sequential designs rotate stimuli automatically between participants. Analysis runs in real time: automatic transcription and summarisation, counts computed by code rather than estimated, pattern recognition across interviews and a consolidated research repository. Every conclusion in the report is traceable to a verbatim quote, and full transcripts are kept rather than summaries alone. Specialised agents handle each phase, from study setup and voice interviewing to transcript-grounded analysis and reporting.

The positioning against synthetic respondents is explicit: Real people, real voices - no synthetic personas, no simulated responses. The approach was reviewed independently by the Nielsen Norman Group in January 2026 and is endorsed by ResearchOps pioneer Kate Towsey. Userflix reports a Proof of Value with a DAX-listed group, a methodological test with the institute GIM, an Omnicom Group venture-clienting partnership and academic validation with Prof. Dr. Stefanie Paluch of RWTH Aachen. The core application and database are hosted in Germany.

What it does

  • Build a study from a brief, a product URL or a conversation with the setup agent
  • Share one interview link with your own participants or a recruited panel, with nothing to schedule
  • Run voice-to-voice interviews where the AI moderator asks its own follow-up questions
  • Show images, prototypes and live websites during the interview and probe the reaction
  • Embed NPS and Likert scales in the conversation and ask participants why they scored that way
  • Get transcription, analysis and a structured report automatically as interviews come in
  • Query every transcript in plain language with Ask Your Study and get answers with citations

When to use Userflix / When not to

A quick filter to help you decide if Userflix is the right fit.

When to use Userflix

  • Consumer insights (CMI) teams and market research institutes that need qualitative depth at quantitative volumes.
  • UX and CX researchers running continuous discovery, and product managers who need user evidence between two sprints.
  • Brand and marketing teams testing ad creative, packaging concepts and positioning with real consumers.
  • Research agencies scaling delivery, in the words of the site, from ten interviews a quarter to a hundred, while protecting margins and turnaround.
  • Strategy and innovation teams validating a hypothesis with end users before committing budget to it.
  • Teams running multi-market, multilingual studies without juggling time zones, or adding a qualitative follow-up to a quantitative survey by passing panel data through URL parameters.

When not to use Userflix

  • Consumers and private individuals: Userflix states it provides its services to businesses only and does not offer them to consumers.
  • Studies that need participants under 16, who are excluded from interviews.
  • Anyone shopping for synthetic respondents or simulated personas: the platform is explicitly built against that approach and only interviews real people.
  • Engineering teams that need programmatic integration: there is no product API, no published API documentation and no iOS or Android app.
  • Buyers who want a published price list and a self-service purchase: commercial terms go through a sales Order Form.
  • Teams that need emotion recognition or biometric categorisation, a durable archive of audio and video footage, or enterprise SSO with centralised identity, none of which are available today.
Get started

How to use Userflix

A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.

  1. Open a study and drop in your context and objectives, a product URL or a short brief; the setup assistant proposes questions and an interview structure.
  2. Refine the guide in the block editor: you keep control of methodology, wording and quality.
  3. Set the advanced parameters - interview mode, script adherence, maximum duration, study limits, end date, post-completion redirect and your internal terminology.
  4. Switch on the external data connectors you need, among Notion, Linear and Intercom.
  5. Share the interview link with your own participants, or wire it into a panel using URL parameters and a redirect that sends respondents back to the right place afterwards.
  6. Let participants join asynchronously, around the clock: the link opens in any browser, the AI moderator welcomes them and they see their own camera as in a video call.
  7. Interviews run voice-to-voice in the participant's language, with dynamic follow-ups and stimuli shown at the right moment and probed immediately.
  8. Watch the analysis build in real time: transcripts, summaries, counts, cross-interview patterns and a repository updated as sessions land.
  9. Interrogate the whole study in plain language with Ask Your Study; answers are grounded in the transcripts, ranked by relevance, with participant-level citations and suggested follow-ups.
  10. Read the single report combining quantitative scores and qualitative themes, delivered in hours to a few days rather than weeks.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Qualitative depth at quantitative scale: hundreds of open-ended interviews run in parallel, around the clock, in more than 50 languages and without a single appointment to arrange.
  • Methodological traceability: full transcripts rather than summaries, every conclusion tied back to a verbatim quote, and counts computed by code instead of estimated.
  • Real human participants and no synthetic personas, with an independent evaluation by the Nielsen Norman Group to back the method.
  • Data sovereignty: core application and database hosted in Germany with Hetzner, other services EU-configured, and a detailed public Trust Center naming each subprocessor with its location and transfer safeguard.
  • No model training on customer content: a contractual undertaking in the Terms rather than a marketing promise, alongside no durable retention of the standard flow's audio, camera or screen content.
  • EU AI Act transparency: participants are told they are talking to an AI and may leave at any time; legal documents are bilingual, versioned and dated, and the product changelog is public and active.
  • Visual stimuli are probed in the moment rather than merely described, and participants need no installation at all - a link and a browser.

Cons

  • No published pricing: there is no pricing page anywhere on the site, and fees are set contractually in a commercial Order Form.
  • The only public figure, an order of magnitude of cost per interview, is displayed in a different currency depending on the language of the page, so it cannot be relied on as a price.
  • No product API and no API documentation, and no iOS or Android app: programmatic integration is impossible.
  • Enterprise SSO and centralised provisioning are not available yet, only announced on the roadmap, and the 50+ supported interview languages are never listed.
  • ISO 27001 is not certified, only marked planned for 2027, the external penetration test is still in progress, and no documented mechanism lets a customer opt its data out of training (the regime is opt-in by prior written consent, not opt-out).
  • Some real-time interview configurations may process data outside the EEA, including in the United States or globally, and the optional continuity feature can leave conversational state with the provider for up to 24 hours.
  • Business customers only, with no consumer access and no contact page (the footer link opens a modal without a URL), no refund or credit for an aborted or incomplete interview, and participant incentives, recruitment and third-party fees left to the customer.
Pricing

Pricing & Plans

Userflix publishes no price list. There is no pricing page on the site, and the Terms state that Fees, billing cycle, term and any service levels are set out in the applicable Order Form, the order document - quotation or order confirmation - that records the commercial terms of a subscription. Fees are quoted exclusive of German VAT, invoices are payable within fourteen days and late payment carries statutory commercial interest; payment is made by card through Stripe or by bank transfer. No free plan and no free trial are announced on any published page. The only figure the site does publish is an order of magnitude of cost per completed interview, a 10-50 range shown inside its method comparison tables. Its currency cannot be determined, because the same number is rendered with a dollar sign on the English pages and in euros on the German ones, and it is an illustrative order of magnitude rather than a contractual rate. The other amounts in those tables - 200-500+ per human-moderated interview, 500-2,000+ per focus group, 10,000-100,000+ per ethnographic study, 1-10 per online survey, 0.01-1 per synthetic respondent - are market costs of alternative methods, not Userflix rates. Participant incentives, recruitment and third-party fees remain the customer's responsibility.

Prices and plans listed above may evolve. Always check the official pricing page before subscribing.

Data, GDPR & hosting

A consolidated view of how Userflix handles your data.

GDPR overview

GDPR implementation is documented in detail. The Trust Center reports GDPR - Compliant, with an Article 28 processing agreement (AVV) and Article 32 technical and organisational measures available in German and English on request, subprocessor annex included. EU AI Act transparency under Article 50 is implemented: participants are told they are speaking to an AI. No Data Protection Officer is appointed, the company stating it is not legally required to do so, and the competent authority is the LDI NRW. Rights under Articles 15 to 21 are answered within one month, extendable by two. Transfers outside the EEA rely on adequacy decisions and standard contractual clauses. TLS is enforced throughout, databases sit on a restricted private network, and breach notification follows Articles 33 and 34. As an EU-established company, Userflix needs no Article 27 representative. ISO 27001 is not held: the Trust Center marks it planned for 2027.

Who owns the data?

The Terms are explicit: as between the parties, the customer owns all Customer Data and Study Output. Userflix receives only a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide licence to host, process, transmit and display that content, and solely to deliver and secure the service. GDPR roles are split: Userflix is controller for account and billing data, and processor for interviews and participant data, where the customer is the controller of the transcripts. Userflix does not access transcripts except on the customer's instruction, for support and incident handling, or where the law requires it. Only fully anonymised, aggregated and non-attributable data may be reused on its own account.

Reuse rights

Because the customer owns the material, it can reuse its transcripts, analyses and reports for its own purposes without asking Userflix for permission; it is the platform's own reuse rights that are restricted. Userflix undertakes not to use customer data, participant content, recordings or transcripts to train or improve its own or any third party's AI models, except with the customer's prior written consent, and states that We do not use Customer interview content to train general-purpose foundation models. The privacy policy lists every processing purpose with its Article 6(1) legal basis: account, website analytics, technical logs, cookies, approximate location, support, newsletter, billing, service messages and job applications. PostHog analytics runs on the public website only, and only after consent; it is not embedded in the authenticated product or in a participant interview. Audio is processed in real time to conduct and transcribe the conversation, with no durable storage of audio, camera or screen content in the standard flow, and screen content is transmitted only when it is expressly enabled. An optional interview-continuity feature lets the configured provider hold conversational state for up to 24 hours. There is no automated decision-making producing legal effects under Article 22, and the company states that it does not sell personal data, its business model being a paid service rather than broad data collection.

Data retention & training

Retention summary
Account data is kept until the user deletes the account. Billing records follow German statutory periods, generally eight years for invoices and accounting vouchers and up to ten years for books, inventories and annual accounts. Newsletter data lasts until consent is withdrawn. Usage data is kept as long as it is needed for statistical validity, product decisions and technical monitoring, then deleted or aggregated. Transcripts and participant data are governed by the customer as controller and by the DPA, including deletion or return at the end of the contract; where they sit under Userflix's control, the default is deletion after twelve months of account inactivity. Audio, camera and screen content from the standard interview flow is not durably retained, and the optional continuity state lasts at most 24 hours. Individual transcripts can be deleted from the web interface, and study data can be exported for 30 days after termination.

Hosting summary

The core application and the database records are hosted in Germany. Hosting is provided by Hetzner Online GmbH (Gunzenhausen, Germany) inside the EU/EEA with no third-country transfer, and the website itself resolves to Hetzner infrastructure in Falkenstein. Four further subprocessors are named publicly. Microsoft Ireland Operations Limited (Dublin) supplies cloud infrastructure, file storage and AI-assisted study setup and evaluation, plus some real-time interview processing: storage stays in the EU/EEA, while certain real-time configurations may run outside it, covered by the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses. Google Cloud EMEA Limited (Dublin) powers real-time AI-assisted participant interviews, voice dialogue and optional screen-content processing; it runs in the EU/EEA where configured and supported, but some configurations may process in the United States or globally, under the Google Cloud DPA, standard contractual clauses and adequacy decisions. PostHog, Inc. (Delaware) runs on PostHog Cloud EU in Frankfurt for website analytics and, if separately enabled, product analytics. Myra Security GmbH (Munich) provides the European anti-abuse CAPTCHA protecting participant access. The list is published in the Trust Center, last updated 2026-08-30; the signed DPA and its annex remain the contractual reference.

Things to keep in mind

Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting Userflix.

  • Do not read the displayed cost per interview as a quotation: the site shows the same number in two different currencies depending on the language of the page. Real fees are contractual, set in an Order Form, quoted excluding VAT and never published.
  • Do not credit Userflix with ISO 27001. It is not certified; the Trust Center marks the standard as planned for 2027, and the ISO 27001 named in the privacy policy belongs to Hetzner's data centres. The external penetration testing programme is also still being set up, so no report exists yet.
  • Data can leave the EEA in some configurations: certain real-time interview setups may process in the United States or globally through Google Cloud, and if the optional interview continuity feature is enabled, text, audio and screen content may sit with the provider for up to 24 hours.
  • You remain the controller. The customer stays responsible for participant data and for the lawfulness of its studies, including under Article 5 of the EU AI Act; delegating the moderator to an AI does not delegate that accountability.
  • Automating the moderator quietly tempts you to automate the thinking. The AI asks the follow-ups, computes the counts and drafts the report, and a well-formatted synthesis is easy to accept without listening to a single interview. The full transcripts and verbatim links exist precisely so findings can be challenged - use them, and keep human judgement on guide design, sampling and interpretation.
  • Read the commercial small print: no refund or credit is granted for an aborted or incomplete interview whatever the cause, and where the German and English legal documents diverge, the German version prevails.
  • The site contradicts itself on its own registered address, written Juelicher Straße 11 on the Imprint page and Jülicher Straße 11 in the privacy policy and terms; and the founding year shown on the About page, 2025, is later than the first archived capture of the domain, so the incorporation date cannot be treated as established.
Setup

Setup & Integrations

Technical difficulty

Setup is light. Userflix is a web application: nothing to install, and studies are built through a setup assistant, with no development work. Participants do even less - one link, any browser, no account, no app, no appointment. Two cases need engineering time: panel integration, which relies on URL parameters and post-completion redirects set panel-side, and in-product embedded conversations, which require integration in the customer's own product. Notion, Linear and Intercom connectors can be switched on. No API or documented webhooks exist, so nothing can be automated programmatically; MFA is available on configured accounts, enterprise SSO is not.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Who publishes Userflix, and where is the company based?
Userflix is published by Userflix UG (haftungsbeschränkt), based in Zülpich, Germany, and registered with the Amtsgericht Bonn under commercial register number HRB 29669. It is a spin-off of RWTH Aachen, and its About page places the team in Cologne.
What does a participant have to do to take part in an interview?
Participants receive a link from a survey, an email or a panel, open it in any browser and land in a video-style session where the AI moderator welcomes them. There is no app to install, no account to create and no appointment to book. Participants must be at least 16 years old.
Are these real people or synthetic respondents?
Real people. Userflix interviews human participants and positions itself explicitly against simulated personas and synthetic responses; the AI replaces the moderator, never the respondent.
How many languages can interviews be run in?
The platform claims more than 50 interview languages, with the AI moderator speaking the participant's own language. The individual languages are not listed publicly, so check the ones you need with the vendor. The interface and the legal documents are available in English and German.
Is my interview content used to train AI models?
No. The Terms commit Userflix not to use customer data, participant content, recordings or transcripts to train or improve its own or any third party's AI models, except with the customer's prior written consent, and the privacy policy adds that interview content is not used to train general-purpose foundation models. Fully anonymised and aggregated data may still be used.
Where is the data hosted?
The core application and the database records are hosted in Germany with Hetzner, while file storage and AI-assisted study evaluation run on EU-configured services. Some real-time interview configurations may process outside the EEA, including in the United States or globally, under standard contractual clauses and adequacy decisions.
Is the interview audio recorded and kept?
No durable recording of audio, camera or screen content is kept from the standard interview flow: audio is processed in real time to run and transcribe the conversation. If the optional interview-continuity feature is enabled, the configured provider may hold conversational state for up to 24 hours.
What compliance documents and certifications does Userflix have?
An Article 28 data processing agreement (AVV) is available in German and English on request through the Trust Center, with a subprocessor annex, alongside technical and organisational measures, a security whitepaper, a deletion concept and incident management documentation. Userflix is not ISO 27001 certified: the Trust Center lists it as planned, targeted for 2027, and the ISO 27001 mentioned in the privacy policy is that of Hetzner's data centres.
Is there an API or single sign-on?
No product API and no API documentation are published, so there is no programmatic integration; connectors for Notion, Linear and Intercom are available instead. Multi-factor authentication can be enabled on configured accounts, but enterprise single sign-on is still on the roadmap.
What does Userflix cost?
There is no public price list. Fees, billing cycle and term are set in an Order Form negotiated with the vendor. The site publishes only an order of magnitude of cost per completed interview inside its method comparison tables, and shows the same figure in two different currencies depending on the language of the page, so it should not be read as a quoted rate.
Conclusion

Should you pick Userflix?

Userflix is an unapologetically niche tool: agentic qualitative research for insights, product, brand and agency teams that already run interviews and want more of them without adding moderators. Its strengths are consistent with that ambition - qualitative depth at a scale usually reserved for surveys, findings traceable to the verbatim rather than to a summary, real participants instead of synthetic personas, core hosting in Germany, and an unusually candid public Trust Center that names every subprocessor and its transfer safeguard. The refusal to train models on customer content is written into the Terms, not just into the marketing, and EU AI Act transparency is handled where it matters, in front of the participant.

The reservations are equally clear. Nothing about the price is public: fees live in a commercial Order Form, and the one figure the site does display, an order of magnitude per interview, appears in two different currencies depending on the page language. There is no API, no mobile app and no enterprise SSO yet, ISO 27001 is planned rather than held, and some real-time interview configurations can process outside the EEA. The publisher is young - an RWTH Aachen spin-off that its own About page dates to 2025 - with genuine but still early traction: an independent Nielsen Norman Group review, a proof of value with a DAX-listed group, a methodological test with a top German institute.

Buy it if you want to replace or extend focus groups and one-to-one interviews at a volume no human panel of moderators could sustain, and if a European data footprint matters to your legal team. Look elsewhere if you need a questionnaire tool, synthetic data, a self-service price or a documented API - and budget a sales conversation, because there is no other way in.
