WellSaid
WellSaid is an enterprise text-to-speech platform whose 240+ AI voices are built from licensed studio recordings of real voice actors. Teams generate studio-quality voiceovers for training, marketing and video, with full commercial rights included.
What is WellSaid?
WellSaid is a text-to-speech platform published by WellSaid Labs, Inc., a Seattle company founded in 2019. It comes in two shapes: WellSaid Studio, a web application where a pasted script becomes finished audio, and a REST text-to-speech API for teams that would rather build the voice into their own product.
The library is the argument. WellSaid advertises 240 or more AI voices, and every one of them is modelled on licensed studio recordings made by a professional voice actor who gave written consent and is paid residuals on customer usage. No open-source or scraped data goes into training, and users have never been able to clone a voice themselves, which rules out the deepfake exposure that shadows the rest of this market. The homepage FAQ lists 18 languages, from Arabic and Cantonese through Persian, Polish and Portuguese to Swedish and Turkish, with a long tail of regional accents: Appalachian, Midwestern, Texan and Mountain West English alongside Australian, Canadian, Indian, Irish, New Zealand, Scottish and South African variants.
Inside Studio, generation is unlimited on paid plans and only downloaded minutes count against the quota. Delivery is shaped with AI Director for tone, pitch and expression, one-click emotional presets, AI-driven phonetic Smart Suggestions and a built-in Oxford dictionary for US and UK pronunciation. A shared pronunciation library keeps product names and acronyms consistent across a team, and projects live in shared workspaces with per-clip comments, team favourite voices and role-based access. Exports run from MP3 up to WAV and OGG, at 24, 48 or 96 kHz depending on plan, with .SRT and .VTT caption files generated alongside.
The enterprise framing is consistent throughout: a closed proprietary model described as patented, SOC 2 Type I and Type II, GDPR, SSO and SAML, content moderation and custom master service agreements. Adobe Express and Adobe Premiere Pro integrations cover the creative workflow. WellSaid claims more than 40,000 customers and names Microsoft, MOTUL, 4imprint and Canon America Medical Systems among them. Translation and non-English voices, however, sit behind the Enterprise plan.

When to use WellSaid / When not to
A quick filter to help you decide if WellSaid is the right fit.
When to use WellSaid
- Learning and development teams narrating compliance, onboarding and product training at volume
- Marketing and brand teams producing advertising, campaign and social voiceovers on a weekly cycle
- Video and podcast producers who need one voice to stay identical across edits and episodes
- Product and engineering teams embedding real-time speech into an application through the API
- Regulated organisations that require SOC 2 Type II evidence, SSO and a signed data processing agreement
When not to use WellSaid
- Anyone hoping to clone their own or someone else's voice, which WellSaid has never permitted
- Users who need speech-to-text: the platform only converts text into audio, never the reverse
- Mobile-first creators, since Studio is a web application with no iOS or Android app
- Small budgets needing non-English voices or translation, both reserved for the Enterprise plan
- European buyers requiring EU data residency, as hosting and processing are United States only
How to use WellSaid
A typical end-to-end flow, from setup to results.
- Create a free account on WellSaid Studio; no credit card is required
- Paste or import your script into the Studio editor
- Browse the voice library by language, accent, tone, style or use case
- Preview candidate voices directly inside your own script before committing
- Shape the delivery with AI Director: pronunciation, pacing, tone and emotional preset
- Regenerate freely, since on paid plans only the minutes you download are counted
- Add recurring product names and acronyms to the shared phonetic library
- Organise clips into shared project workspaces and collect comments from the team
- Export the audio as MP3, WAV or OGG, with .SRT or .VTT captions where needed
- Developers: request a seven-day API trial key and POST to the /v1/tts/stream endpoint
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Voices built from licensed recordings by consenting, royalty-paid professional actors
- Full commercial usage rights included on every paid plan, from solo creator to enterprise
- Customer data is never used for training, stated identically across all five plans
- SOC 2 Type I and II, GDPR compliance and a public DPA naming every sub-processor
- Voice cloning is impossible by design, which removes the deepfake exposure entirely
- Unlimited generation: only the audio actually downloaded is metered
- Documented REST API with a free seven-day trial key, plus Adobe integrations
Cons
- Non-English voices and translation are reserved for the Enterprise plan
- Published figures contradict each other: 240+ versus 280+ voices, 18 versus 50+ languages
- Download minutes are tightly capped, three per month free and twenty on monthly Starter
- The free Trial plan carries no commercial usage rights whatsoever
- Team plans require annual commitment, and Business stops at five seats
- Hosting is United States only, with no EU data residency option offered
- No mobile app, and the privacy policy has not been updated since July 2024

Data, GDPR & hosting
A consolidated view of how WellSaid handles your data.
GDPR overview
Compliance is claimed explicitly and backed by documents. The security page states that WellSaid is SOC 2 Type II certified and maintains compliance with the GDPR and with the requirements of the EU AI Act. A public Data Processing Agreement, last updated on 13 May 2026, covers the GDPR, the UK GDPR, the Swiss FADP and the CCPA, relying on the 2021/914 EU Standard Contractual Clauses and the ICO's UK Addendum for transfers. Sub-processors are engaged under general written authorisation, with fourteen days to object. EEA rights are listed in full, access, rectification, erasure, portability, objection and restriction, with a one-month response window. Two gaps deserve naming: no Article 27 EU representative is designated and no data protection officer is appointed, privacy requests going to the general support address instead.
Who owns the data?
Ownership stays with the customer. WellSaid states that it does not claim ownership of the content customers render on the platform, and every audio file produced on a paid plan carries full commercial usage rights, covering paid advertising, e-learning, brand campaigns and product marketing alike. The free Trial plan is the exception: its three monthly download minutes come without commercial rights. Under the Data Processing Agreement the customer is the controller, or its own customers' processor, and WellSaid the processor or sub-processor, which keeps instruction power on the customer's side. On written request, WellSaid returns or securely destroys personal data within ninety days.
Reuse rights
On a paid plan the answer is yes, with no further permission needed. Every generated file ships with full commercial usage rights, and WellSaid applies identical terms to solo creators and enterprise teams: paid advertising, audio advertising, product marketing, brand campaigns and e-learning content are all covered. The free Trial plan is deliberately carved out, its three monthly download minutes carrying no commercial rights at all. Protection runs in the other direction too. Inputs and outputs are never used to train WellSaid's models on any plan, the pricing table repeating "Never" across all five tiers, and the vendor states that it neither sells customer data nor personally identifiable information. Content moderation applies throughout, with end-user allow-listing negotiable on Enterprise accounts.

Hosting summary
Everything runs in the United States. Customer data is hosted and processed on Google Cloud Platform in a US region, in an environment managed by WellSaid engineers who are themselves US based. Data in transit is encrypted with TLS 1.2 and data at rest with AES 256-bit encryption. The hosting environment carries 24/7/365 monitoring, continuous vulnerability scanning, intrusion detection and regular penetration testing, and WellSaid states that its infrastructure is deployed on FINRA, HIPAA and ISO-compliant services. Database snapshots are taken every twenty-four hours, with point-in-time recovery. Schedule 3 of the Data Processing Agreement names seven sub-processors, all located in the United States: Google Cloud for storage and text-to-speech processing, Azure for language mechanics, Mixpanel for analytics, Verisoul for user verification, PerspectiveAI and Hive for content moderation, and MongoDB, Inc. for storage and API. No EU or other regional hosting option is offered, and the privacy policy warns European users explicitly that their data is transferred to the United States. System availability is published at status.wellsaidlabs.com.
Things to keep in mind
Risks and trade-offs to weigh before adopting WellSaid.
- Synthetic narration at scale can flatten a brand's human voice, and audiences increasingly detect and discount it
- Unlimited regeneration invites endless tweaking: teams can spend more time perfecting a line than recording it would have taken
- Non-English voices and translation are Enterprise-only, so a localisation project bought on a lower tier will stall
- Quotas count downloaded minutes rather than generated ones, so the ceiling arrives at export, often later than expected
- United States-only hosting with no Article 27 representative places the compliance burden back on European controllers
- The mandatory arbitration clause, class action waiver and USD 100 liability cap in the website terms deserve a legal read
- Two different postal addresses appear across the site, both PO boxes, which complicates serving formal legal notice
Setup & Integrations
Technical difficulty
Low for the business user, moderate for the developer. Studio needs no installation: sign up without a credit card, paste a script, and a first voiceover is ready within minutes on an interface the vendor describes as no-code. The API is a genuine engineering task, with an X-API-KEY header, REST endpoints and inline tempo, loudness and pitch tags, though a documented playground and a seven-day trial key soften the curve. Adobe Express and Premiere Pro require installing an add-on from Adobe Exchange. Enterprise deployments add SSO and SAML configuration, with onboarding and training provided above three licences.

Should you pick WellSaid?
WellSaid has picked a lane and stayed in it. Where much of the AI voice market competes on volume and price, this platform competes on provenance and paperwork: every voice traces back to a named professional who signed a consent form and receives residuals, the model is closed and proprietary, and voice cloning is not a feature that was disabled but one that has never existed. For a legal or procurement team reviewing an AI purchase, that story is unusually easy to defend.
The compliance layer matches the pitch: SOC 2 Type I and Type II, an explicit GDPR claim, a published data processing agreement naming all seven sub-processors, and a no-training commitment stated identically on the free plan and the Enterprise plan. Generation is unlimited and only downloaded minutes are metered, which suits teams that iterate on a line twenty times before shipping it.
The reservations are practical rather than ethical. Non-English voices and translation sit behind the Enterprise plan, so a marketing team buying Pro for localisation work will be disappointed. Hosting is United States only, with no EU residency option, no Article 27 representative and no named data protection officer, which is a real consideration for a European controller. Download quotas are tight at the lower tiers, the free plan carries no commercial rights, and team plans demand annual commitment. The site also contradicts itself on basic numbers: 240 or 280 voices, 18 or 50 languages, a G2 score of 4.6 or 4.7 depending on the page, and a privacy policy that has not moved since July 2024 while the terms and the DPA both have.
Verdict: a credible choice for enterprise learning, marketing and communications teams that value licensed voices and audit-ready documentation, and a poor fit for anyone needing EU hosting or affordable multilingual output.
